On Wednesday, November 13, 2012, Doyle New York will auction imporant American paintings from the Estate of Waldo Hutchins, III. The collection will highlight Doyle New York's November 13 sale of American Art.

A discerning collector over a period of more than thirty years, Mr. Hutchins sought out objects of indisputable quality, with a special focus on superb American paintings.  He had a special fondness for views of Long Island, where he long made his home.

Among the highlights of the November 13 sale are Thomas Moran’s verdant Stormy Skies Over Long Island, painted in 1885, shortly after he made East Hampton his primary residence. Although he painted many of his grand Western scenes in his East End studio, he also wandered the by-ways of Long Island, capturing the ever-changing skies in painterly compositions such as the present work.

Winter Haze by Walter Launt Thompson is another gem from the Hutchins Collection. A paradigm of the snow scenes for which Thompson is best known, the painting bears an inscribed title on its stretcher in the artist’s own hand.

Colin Campbell Cooper’s forthright depiction of Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn depicts the New York City landmark framed by skyscrapers from the vantage point of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The compositional elements that divide the composition into a series of powerful geometric forms make this one of Cooper’s more modern compositions.

Finally, two exquisite New York City scenes by Paul Cornoyer, known for his views of the parks and landmarks of Manhattan, are also featured in the sale. The Fifth Avenue Hotel is an intimate symphony of coral and muted earth tones, representing a busy city square at dusk.  For the larger Rainy Day, Columbus Circle, Cornoyer chose a cooler palette to describe the rain-slicked street, a few intrepid New Yorkers venturing out despite the threatening skies.

Several other works from the Estate of Waldo Hutchins, III figure prominently in the November 19 sale of American Furniture and Decorative Arts, including Paintings and Prints. These include Frederick Kost’s softly luminous Gathering Salt Hay at Brookhaven, Long Island, Barnyard Scene, East Hampton by George H. Smillie, a pond scene in Wading River, Long Island, attributed to William M. Davis, and Henry Pember Smith’s charming Orchard and Pond in Spring.
