To mark the National Trust's major exhibition "Constable at Petworth", at Petworth House, Sussex, UK, a selling exhibition of pictures by artists linked to the great British landscape artist John Constable is being held at the newly established Kevis House Gallery in Petworth. The exhibition is titled "Connecting to Constable".

Both exhibitions start on Saturday, 11 January. "Connecting to Constable" ends on 2 February, but the National Trust exhibition runs until 14 March.

This small inaugural exhibition at the new Kevis House Gallery in Lombard Street, Petworth, will feature work by Constable himself as well as artists who were connected to him or who influenced him.

Among the pictures in the "Connecting to Constable" show will be:

• a rare watercolour by John Thomas "Antiquity" Smith (1766–1833), who was a major influence on Constable when he was aged 20.

• an oil on paper of Hampstead by William George Jennings (1763–1854), with whom Constable shared a house.  (image above)

• a collection of mezzotints by John Constable and his collaborator David Lucas (1802-1881), one of which has hand touching by Constable, showing the level to which the artist supervised his engraver.

• a pencil drawing by Ramsay Reinagle (1775 - 1862), Constable's fellow student at the Royal Academy. This work has been attributed by some to Constable himself, but is more probably by Reinagle. Constable and Reinagle were close friends but fell out later in life, partly it is thought because Constable was not elected to the Academy until six years after Reinagle.

All the pictures are for sale, with the exception of a drawing by Constable which is on loan.  Prices range from £150 to £2,200.

Kevis House Gallery, in Lombard Street, Petworth, has been established by Hodgson Events, the organisers of the annual Works on Paper Art Fair. The Fair takes place from 6 - 9 February at the Science Museum in London. "All the pictures in this exhibition are being offered for sale by art dealers who are showing at this year's Works on Paper Fair." said Fair director Lucy Russell. Among the dealers contributing works are early English watercolour specialist Guy Peppiatt, print dealer Elizabeth Harvey-Lee, Price Davies Fine Art, and the long-established art dealers Abbott and Holder.
