WASHINGTON -  Just in time for the holidays, Weschler’s, DC's only auction house, will present for sale over 300 works of art, jewelry, silver, rugs, and Asian art in its Capital Collections sale on Fri., Dec. 9.  

FINE ART from the Estate of Harold Hart will be among the fine art offerings of the sale. Harold Hart, a DC native, was the Gallery Director at the Martha Jackson Gallery for over twenty years. He was the first ever African-American Director of a major private gallery.

Notable works from his estate include the acrylic on canvas by Paul Jenkins, Phenomena Head of Astral Harold ($20,000-$30,000) signed and dated 1698; and the whimsical ceramic sculpture by Pablo Picasso, Mat Wood-Owl ($10,000-$15,000). The vase is partially glazed and engraved as well as inscribed and numbered. Works from the Hart Estate also include those by Norman Bluhm, James Little, and Francisco Toledo.

Works by Henri Matisse, John Fabian Carlson, Ansel Adams, Jacob Lawrence, and a large-scale sculpture by Fletcher Benton will also be part of the sale.

JEWELRY makes the perfect gift for the holiday season. The December sale features over 85 lots of jewelry and watches with pieces by Jack Kelége, Rolex, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb, Elizabeth Locke, and Julius Cohen.

Jewelry highlights include an Edwardian matinee length platinum and diamond pendant brooch, circa 1910 ($6,000-$8,000); a platinum and emerald line bracelet by M. Waslikoff & Sons, circa 1950 ($4,000-$6,000); a gentleman’s 18-karat yellow-gold 17-jewel wristwatch by Vacheron & Constantin ($4,000-$6,000); two large carat blue sapphire and diamond cocktail rings each carrying a $30,000-$50,000 estimate; and a fine selection of diamond rings including a 1.12 carat pink diamond ring ($3,000-$5,000) and a 4.87 carat platinum solitaire diamond ring by Jack Kelége ($30,000-$50,000).

SILVER AND DECORATIVE ART featured lots include an American silver strainer and pair of sugar nips by Philip Syng, Jr., 1703-1789 ($3,000-$5,000); a Herend ‘Blue Garden’ 97-piece dinner service, 1915-1930s, ($2,000-$4,000); a Lalique molded and frosted glass ‘Luxembourg’ vase designed by René Lalique, circa 1945 ($1,500-$2,500); and two pairs of Sèvres-type urns mounted as lams, each estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

The public is welcome to view lots during exhibition hours prior to the sale: Sat. Dec. 3 from 9 a.m.-noon; Sun., Dec. 4 from 11 a.m-3 p.m.; and the following weekdays preceding the sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except Thurs., Dec. 8 when the preview will close at 2 p.m.) An auction catalogue is available for purchase.
