From March 26 to 31, 2011 the renowned Italian exhibition space Palazzo Ca' del Duca in Venice showcases Sylke von Gaza's solo show „Light & Painting". The Munich based artist and master student of Sean Scully had been invited to a three-month residency at the Canale Grande and will now, at the end of her stay in the lagoon city, present her large-scale abstract „Veil Paintings" and new works produced in Venice. The Palazzo Ca' del Duca, host of the Luxembourg pavilion during the Venice Biennial, already served as a studio for Titian, one of the most influential Italian painters, where he produced paintings for the Doge's Palace.
The essence of painting is a key question in Sylke von Gaza's Œuvre. During her studies with Sean Scully, she started her palette at a point zero: For a period of three years she solely worked with the color gray. „Gray is a colour that takes me to the beginnings of things" she explains with regard to her momumental series of the so-called „Gray Veil Painting".
Carefully the artist opened her palette and added color to her work. Layer after layer, Sylke von Gaza composes her „Veil Paintings" which call into mind the great Colour Field Painters Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman.
In her exhibition „Light & Painting", Sylke von Gaza will present for the first time a light installation and glass objects created in the famous manufacturies of Murano nearby Venice.
