LA Art Show Closes with Significant Sales and High Attendance

The 19th annual LA Art Show closed with consistently strong attendance topping 50,000 enthusiastic collectors and participating galleries reporting significant sales. More than 140 galleries, one-third of which traveled from outside of the United States, participated in the annual art fair, which welcomed the debut of the Los Angeles Jewelry, Antique & Design Show, co-located and taking place in tandem at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Numerous galleries reported selling out during the course of the 5-day show with healthy sales coming from both loyal customers and new clients. Galleries who reported sales ranged from London-based Waterhouse & Dodd and Chris Beetles Gallery to local Los Angeles galleries Jack Rutberg Fine Arts, Timothy Yarger Fine Arts and Bruce Lurie Gallery to name a few. The new Littletopia section, curated by Red Truck Gallery, brought a unique viewpoint to the roster and was met with critical acclaim, garnering high sales for many of the eleven participating galleries, and significant media attention.
The 2014 LA Art Show received a strong positive response in the media with articles in the Los Angeles Times, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, KCET, KPCC, Artnet, Art Daily, NBC Los Angeles, the Orange County Register, The Huffington Post, LA Magazine, The Los Angeles Daily News, The Pasadena Star News, The Daily Breeze, Examiner LA, LAist, Cartwheel Art, Fine Art Connoisseur, Art Nerd and others. An extensive New York Times article highlighting the Treasures of the Maya Spirit exhibition at our sister event, the Los Angeles, Jewelry, Antique and Design Show helped produce robust attendance right up until the show closed on Sunday evening.
Special exhibitions by Venice Biennale Korea Pavilion artists Lee Yong Baek and Choi Jeung Hwa curated by Park Ryu Sook Gallery were met with critical interest. Da Xiang Art Space brought China Pavilion artist Zhang Yu who is currently being featured in the Metropolitan Museum’s Ink Art : Past as Present in Contemporary China. Installations by local LA Art Association artists Cindy Jackson & David Jang were embraced by the crowds and media alike.
Dialogs LA, the LA Art Show lecture series featured discussions with art experts and top trendsetters, including: Van Gogh Museum Director, Axel Rüger, acclaimed Swiss architect Harry Gugger, art critic Edward Goldman, Photographer Gil Garcetti, Designer James Magni, FIDM Museum Curator, Kevin Jones, Cliff Einstein, Emeritus Director of MOCA, Itala Schmelz Curator, Biennale di Venezia – Mexico, jewelry specialist and museum consultant Janet Zapata, President of La Ruta Maya, Fernando Piaz, and artists Kenton Nelson, Andrea Juan, and Zhang Yu.
The show opened with a benefit for the Sister Cities of Los Angeles. Guests in attendance including Princess Anita of the Netherlands, Barbara Streisand and James Brolin dined on gourmet tastings from downtown’s Rivera Restaurant and fine wines shipped in from Bordeaux.
