drkrm is pleased to present Some Just Shapeless Forms, an exhibit of photographic works by Los Angeles artist John Rosewall. The exhibit will be on display from July 7 through July 21, 2012. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, July 7, from 7 to 10 pm.

Rosewall utilizes both analog and digital processes to create the intimately scaled abstract works that will be featured in this exhibit. They are studio creations, made by directing colored light onto small, reflective sculptures, photographing the results on film, and processing the images extensively in Photoshop. Rosewall treats each digital file as a virtual canvas, “a field of pixels,” in the words of Chris Wiley, “where painterly marks can be simulated.” There is no attempt to create a picture of the world, as there would be in a traditional photograph. Instead, each image becomes the site for a series of actions—performed on the mousepad and realized in the circuits of the computer—during which color, shape and texture are mined for their power to evoke moods or trigger associations, in the manner of abstract painting. Each work explores the potentialities of new technology and provides a case study in how photography can be made to operate non-photographically.

Born in California in 1961, John Rosewall studied English at the University of California, played in two seminal Los Angeles rock bands (The Last and Trotsky Icepick), and established a career in teaching before beginning to pursue photography. His exhibition history includes shows in California, New York, Texas and Pennsylvania. He has shown locally at drkrm, Woodbury Hollywood Exhibitions, the Glendale College Art Gallery, and LA Artcore, and he has curated exhibitions of photography in Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo, California. His consistent focus as an artist has been the dialogue between photography and painting, especially in the mode of abstraction.
