For the second time in the month of March, Clarke’s fine art department has compiled a quality grouping of fine art and works on paper for the auction. The fine art selection includes many quality original paintings, several coveted modern photographs, as well as many works on paper by some of the best known artists.
Original painting selections will being with a large and colorful post-impressionist pointillist oil on canvas by Albert Perussaux. The Perussaux painting displays a colorful landscape with tree and shorelines visible from an elevated perspective. While some of the larger and more colorful works of the era may overwhelm, this specific canvas has a more calm and inviting quality. The viewer is allowed to participate in the landscape, and Clarke will allow the viewer to bid on the landscape, with a conservative $1,000/$1,500 estimate.
Another painting entitled “Marital Discord” by Russian artist Vladimir Smachtin may prove particularly interesting on March 29th. What makes the work both beautiful and historically relevant is its support. The work is a painting on a fragment of the Berlin Wall. The painted piece of wall was featured with 114 other fragments of the divide in the "Berlin Wall Art Collection," a traveling exhibition. This specific fragment is signed lower left and inscribed with authentication verso by Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt, Director of the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. The estimate for this lot is a conservative $1,000/$1,500.
Following the striking cultural and artistic imagery of the selection, Czech artist Mila Dolezelova’s oversized figural oil on canvas will be a featured lot in the sale on March 29th. The title, “Abandoned,” changes the sentiment of the figural work as it depicts two young children being held by their mother. The widened eyes and turned perspective of the figures takes the idea of the work from figural to frightening when the title is taken into account. The work will be sold at an estimate of $1,000/$1,500.
Photographs and works on paper will also be an essential part of the March 29th sale, as some especially influential images will be included in the selection. Two of the most recognizable and coveted works on paper will be in the form of screen prints by famed artist Keith Haring. The 1987 and 1988 “Pop Shop I” and “Pop Shop III” will be featured at respective $2,000/$3,000 estimates. The colorful works depict Haring’s identifiable characters in various positions. The prints are excellent representations of Haring’s most well-known body of work, and they should be of interest to both new and seasoned collectors.
Also in the print selections, 5 abstracts by Al Loving will be offered. One lot of 3 abstract screenprints at $3,000/$5,000, a Septahedron print at $1,500/$2,500, and “The Red Queen” screenprint at $800/$1,200. More works on paper by Ray Parker, Vassarely, Anni Albers, and Erte will also be included in the March 29th selection.
Photograph lots include a magnificent Eugene Smith photograph of “Girl on Crutches” estimated $3,000/$5,000 and the abstract “Gardenia” photograph by Robert Maplethorpe which will be estimated $6,000/$9,000.
In-house previews will be held Friday & Saturday, March 27th & 28th from 12pm to 6pm EST and will continue March 29th (Day of Sale) from 10am to 12pm EST (Start of Sale). The catalog is available 24/7 on www.CLARKENY.com and is updated daily.
