FISHER HERITAGE

For those unable to make a New England journey this season, you can find plenty of summer in the city to satisfy your collecting needs at FISHER HERITAGE. There is an abundance of folky textiles that convey summer to put your mind in a vacation mood all year ‘round without having to gas up and travel far. Buying antique is also an eco-conscious way to enhance your life as you adopt what has been cherished before.

Known for discovering distinctive, expressive quilts and hooked rugs as well as best-of-kind classics and intriguing textiles, Fisher has gathered a group of unique pieces that will add interest and a touch of nostalgia to your interior wherever you reside. Fabrics in them conjure up summer memories in such quilts as a FOUR POINT STARS made of seersucker prints familiar from our childhood pj’s and clothing; a STRIP BARS QUILT pieced of floral printed bark cloth summer slipcovers, and ONE PATCH QUILTS pieced of pictorial mid-century fabrics with prints like 1950s swimmers, 1950s travel destinations, and Hawaiian shirt motifs. For classicists there are Sunburst patterns, star-filled 19th and 20th century examples, and flower filled album quilts.

If monochrome ‘no pattern’ is the way you choose to adorn your interior, at FISHER HERITAGE there are shelves of antique whites in hand knit and hand crochet bedspreads of the style found  on every English and French woman’s bed, as well as European manufactured white Marseilles spreads that emulate centuries old hand quilting by nuns.

In homage to this season too are hooked rugs portraying suns, cottages, and abundant flowers. There are floral bouquets within scrolled borders that range over a 100-year time period. Among the pictorials are folkyvignettes that represent a rug maker’s own community or homestead, rather than use a pre- printed pattern. Fisher’s rugs range in size from around 2’ x 4’ to fabulous room size rugs up to 9’ x 12’ that have floral blocks alternating with geometric squares.  Among the more uncommon floral rugs are fine needlepoint-like pieces from the Cheticamp, Cape Breton N.S. community. And there’s a 19th c. English needlepoint album carpet that is a standout among Fisher’s offerings.

FISHER HERITAGE’s summer hours are Monday-Thursday, 11-4, or by appointment.
