- NEW YORK, New York

- September 10, 2014
THE PANORAMIC VIEWS OF A PAIR OF 16TH CENTURY EIGHTFOLD SCREENS IN TONES OF INK WITH INSCRIBED POEMS IN GOLD SCRIPT PROVIDE THE SETTING FOR THIS FALL SHOW OF TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE WORKS OF ART.
AGAINST THIS BACKDROP, SELECT EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL ART REVEAL THE QUALITY AND SCOPE OF THE JAPANESE CREATOR.
A STRONG AND HANDSOME FULL FACED SAMURAI MASK AND A SEATED EXPRESSIVE FIGURE OF THE RAKAN, OR ARHAT, EASILY BLEND WITH STONE SCULPTURE BY THE ACCLAIMED CONTEMPORARY ARTIST, HIROYUKI ASANO. BOTH THE SCREEN AND RAKAN SCULPTURE FIND THEIR ROOTS IN CHINESE ART, THE EIGHT VIEWS OF XIAO-XIANG ON THE SCREENS, AND THE SCULPTURAL DEPICTION OF THE WISE ATTENDANT TO BUDDHA, THE ARHAT.
A FINE WHITE PORCELAIN JAR FROM THE HIRADO KILNS IN FULL ROUND SHAPE WITH LOW RELIEF DECORATION OF DRAGONS AMIDST CLOUD AND WAVES REVEAL THE JAPANESE MASTERY OF THE MEDIUM. HIROYUKI ASANO'S WHITE MARBLE SCULPTURE IS SEEMINGLY AN OUTGROWTH OF THIS FORM.
OLD AND NEW ARE IN HARMONY WITH EACH OTHER IN THIS EXHIBITION.
