Following what has become a routinely strong start to the calendar year, Clarke will continue its important estate art offerings on February 8th.
Two of the most important works are by American artist Paul Jenkins. The first work by Jenkins entitled “Phenomena Broadway Prism at 42nd Street” is an example of the artist’s proclivity toward highly colorful and New York inspired abstraction. This acrylic on canvas will be presented at a conservative estimate of $15,000/$25,000.
The second Jenkins is also a colorful abstract entitled “Phenomena Royal House NYC.” A broader work as compared to the acrylic on canvas, this watercolor will be featured at an estimate of $10,000/$15,000.
Following the same criteria of colorful abstract, Clarke will feature two paintings by British artist, William Stanley Hayter. The first work is an untitled abstract composition of bright oils on canvas estimated at $6,000/$9,000. The next painting by Hayter is a 1978 oil on canvas entitled “Curtain,” which will show with a more modest $2,000/$3,000 estimate.
On the opposite end of the subject spectrum, Clarke will offer two substantial works by Latvian artist, Ludolf Liberts. The works, an oil on board and oil on canvas each depict a more traditional scene. The first shows a scene of Piazza San Marco, while the other represents a Paris street scene. Each scenic painting will be offered at $6,000/$9,000.
Returning to more modern colors, and venturing slightly into the psychedelic, a pair of Lowell Nesbitt paintings will be put to auction on February 8th. The pair, entitled “Electric Tulips” will boast a reasonable $2,000/$3,000 estimate.
A Jane Freilicher 1953 oil on canvas of a summer landscape is also a featured lot in the selection at $6,000/$9,000. A Fredrico Andreotti oil on panel depicting a traditional figural scene of a woman plucking poultry (est. $3,000/$5,000) will round out the featured works, but there will be many more lots of quality art to begin the sale.
Decorative art and sculpture will also hold an important place in the sale. Some of the important estate fresh pieces include 3 sculptures by abstract bronze artist, Bill Barrett. The larger of the 3 sculptures has a beautiful outdoor patina and will boast a highly conservative $1,000/$1,500 estimate, while the other smaller works will be offered at $600/$900 each. Judging by the success of Barrett at auction in the past, these should be three exciting lots in the selection.
A 1952 Picasso earthenware jug will also be featured at $1,000/$1,500. A Pair of Marionette Albert bronze Art Nouveau lamps at $800/$1000 will begin the lighting selection of decorative arts, and a Tiffany & Co. Mantle Clock estimated $1,000/$1,500 will also be auctioned in the category. Galle and Daum glass lots, examples of bisque figures, marble pedestals, and carpets also display the depth of the decorative art selection for February 8th at Clarke.
Jewelry is a major part of the sale and will present to market several important estate pieces including a Cartier 18kt gold and diamond solitaire ring (est. $10,000/$15,000), a pink sapphire, ruby, and diamond ring ($1,000/$1,500), a sapphire, diamond, and platinum ring ($3,000/$4,000), and a 14kt gold white gold and emerald ring ($600/$800).
Midcentury and Asian art and objects will be highlighted in a separate article to be released before the sale on February 8th. In house previews for the sale at Clarke Auction will be held on Friday & Saturday, February 6th & 7th from 12pm to 6pm EST. The previews will continue in-house on Sunday, February 8th (day of sale) from 10am to 12pm EST.
