Go inside and beyond Salvador Dali’s 1935 painting Archeological Reminiscence of Millet’s “Angelus” and explore the world of the surrealist master in virtual reality. A new 360-video of Dreams of Dali takes you inside the painting with your desktop or mobile device. The VR experience is part of Disney and Dali: Architects of the Imagination at The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL., an enriching multimedia exhibition (through June 12) that tells the story of the unlikely alliance between two of the most renowned artists of the twentieth century:brilliantly eccentric Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dali and magically inventive American animator, Walt Disney.
Presented through a multimedia wonderland of original paintings, story sketches, conceptual artwork, objects, correspondences, archival film, photographs, and audio – this comprehensive exhibition showcases two vastly different icons who were drawn to each other through their unique personalities, their enduring friendship, and their collaboration on the animated short Destino. Clips of the film will play within the exhibition gallery and the full short will play throughout the day in the Museum’s theater. The exhibition’s complimentary guided audio tour is narrated by acclaimed actress Sigourney Weaver.
Dali Museum Executive Director, Dr. Hank Hine, remarked, “This exhibition will provide a deeper look into the lives and artistic prominence of Disney and Dali. Through their dedicated work, artistic visions, and ingenious self-promotion, their names are forever fused with their art in our collective imagination. We wake in the world they dreamed for us.” Both Disney and Dali embraced the ideas and technologies of their day, creating a bridge from the art of the past to the art of the future. Their legacies live on throughout today’s film, television, theater, advertising, fashion, and of course art.
To illuminate this visionary spirit, the exhibit will introduce Dreams of Dali, an immersive virtual reality experience that allows visitors to discover the world of the surrealist master like never before. Through three virtual reality stations, visitors can explore Dali’s imagination in a multisensory way by going inside – and beyond – his 1935 painting Archeological Reminiscence of Millet’s “Angelus”.
“We’re excited to bring virtual reality to our visitors through the lens of Dali,” said Dali Museum Marketing Director, Kathy Greif. “Dali was always exploring new ways to express his art. We are proud to give our visitors the opportunity to experience and appreciate art in new ways; advancements in virtual reality allow us to provide an almost tangible view.”
Dreams of Dali was created by San Francisco based agency, Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GS&P) in partnership with The Dali.
