Adding to a recent list of artistic accolades, “Wisdom” by Miami sculptor Santiago Medina will be officially added to the Miami Country Day School’s permanent art collection on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Miami Country Day, 601 NE 107th Street, Miami, FL 33161, 305.779.7200, www.miamicountryday.org. “Wisdom” is a monumental 9 foot highly polished stainless steel sculpture inspired in the lantern of knowledge flame represented as an abstract twisting light reflecting masterpiece (enclosed photo). The sculpture is on a rotating pin system allowing to be displayed in different angles. In addition, a multicolor LEED system provides a wide range of sculpture color changing patterns.
The unveiling coincides with the School’s Planned Giving Advisory Council’s dedication of the Sol Taplin Charitable Foundation Gallery and celebration honoring The 1938 Society and its members: C.W. “Doc” and Hetty Abele; The Bautista Family; Chaplin and Jove Families; Michael J. and Katherine E. Franco; The Garner Foundation; Roger L. Koch; The Parents’ Association; and Stanley and Dorothy Whitman.
Other works by Medina will also be on view in the Taplin Gallery through November 18, 2015. To visit, please contact Ms. Jonina Pitchman, Upper School Arts Department Coordinator at pitchmanj@miamicountryday.org.
“The school felt that the commission of a special sculpture would best express its gratitude to the current and future members of the 1938 Society,” commented Dr. John Davies, Head of School Miami Country Day School. “This sculpture, entitled Wisdom, speaks to the school’s celebration of knowledge as well as the arts. Wisdom provides a meaningful recognition for our benefactors for their gifts that have transformed Miami Country Day School, and it will serve to recognize future benefactors who join the 1938 Society with cumulative gifts of $1 million and above.”
For over 30 years, Medina has balanced two careers – professional artist and physician. As a neuroradiologist and pediatric radiologist, Medina distinctively uses advanced Computerized Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to scan his sculptures and subsequently enhance the volumetric appeal and sculptoric form.
His work has been exhibited worldwide and can be found in both public and private collections. His most recent works exemplify Medina’s vision of academic excellence, made tangible through elegant, stainless steel and bronze sculptures. Recent additions into prestigious academic institutions include: “Flame of Excellence” dedicated to the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and “Infinity” added to the permanent collection of the Tisch Library at Tufts University in Greater Boston. Medina is the only Colombian-American sculptor to have a permanent monumental sculpture at Harvard University. After the Miami Country Day School exhibition, Medina will have an exhibition at Commenoz Gallery in Key Biscayne, Miami from November 17, 2015 to January 16, 2016. This is part of a year-long multicity exhibition tour in multiple galleries in Medellin-Colombia, Miami,Naples-Florida and ending in Boston-Massachusetts. Medina will also have unveiling of the permanent stainless steel sculpture "Dreams" at Stanford University Children's Hospital later this year.
