Jonathan Boos has announced that the gallery will feature a curated exhibition “Jacob Lawrence’s Dynamic Cubism: A Centennial Celebration” to commemorate the anniversary of the artist’s 100th birth year at The Armory Show 2017, beginning March 1st. (The Armory Show, at Piers 92 and 94 in New York, runs through March 5.)

Jonathan Boos will be featured at Insights (Pier 92), a section of the Armory Show emphasizing solo-artist, dual-artist and thematic presentations. This section highlights canonical works of modernism and the post-war era as well as overlooked artistic gems and rediscoveries.  The gallery’s booth will showcase “Jacob Lawrence’s Dynamic Cubism: A Centennial Celebration”, introducing the artist’s work to a new audience of international and contemporary collectors and curators. The exhibition will bring together works from several decades of the artist’s career, as well as an essay written by Michelle DuBois, independent scholar and co-author of the Jacob Lawrence Catalogue Raisonné.

Lawrence coined the term “dynamic cubism” to describe his style that used bold colors, interlocking geometric forms, controlled outlines, angular planes and tilted viewpoints.  Lawrence’s unique compositional style was not merely aesthetic; his scenes told compelling stories about the political, economic, and social forces that defined his era.  The artist’s mastery of content and form will be explored through the exceptional group of paintings exhibited by Jonathan Boos.

Jacob Lawrence (American, 1917-2000) is regarded as one of the most important American Modernist painters of the 20th century, represented in countless museum collections.  The sixty panels of his famous Migration Series from 1941 were most recently the subject of a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, traveled to the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and are now on view at the Seattle Art Museum.  A key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, his work dealt with some of the most challenging issues of his time, including World War II and the Civil Rights Movement. As a vivid chronicler of daily life and social struggle, Lawrence’s work continues to resonate today.

The Armory Show is New York’s premier art fair and a definitive cultural destination for discovering and collecting the world’s most important 20th and 21st century artworks. Staged on Piers 92 & 94, one of the city’s industrial gems, the fair features presentations by leading international galleries, innovative artist commissions and dynamic public programs.  The Armory Show 2017 brings together over 200 of the most influential galleries from 30 countries around the world.  The fair welcomes over 65,000 visitors annually.  Five distinct exhibitor sections guide visitors through nearly two centuries of art history, from established masters of the early 20th century to the next generation of emerging artists.  Jonathan Boos Gallery looks forward to showcasing the powerful, poetic paintings of Jacob Lawrence, a seminal and influential figure in American art, at the fair.
