Just in time for the holiday season, Charlton Hall’s December auction will not disappoint. Featuring the extensive and primarily Asian collection from the estate of Dr. Roger & Carole Stoll, the eclectic sale will also contain a large assortment of sporting guns, fine jewelry by makers including Gobelin and Chaumet, decorative and fine arts, and antique furniture.
On December 6th and 7th, bidders will have the opportunity to purchase pieces that are not only beautiful and unique, but also come with interesting and proud histories ranging from royalty to the Kennedys. Amongst the sporting gun collection will be offered several guns that once belonged to Prince Serge Poutiatine, whose first wife was the second cousin of Nicolaus II, the last Czar of Russia. Three guns, including a Purdey SxS self-opening sidelock ejector 20-bore sporting gun, a Parker CHE Grade 4 SxS 12ga 1 1/2 frame shotgun, and a Francotte VL&D Knock-About SxS 20ga sporting gun were descended from Poutiatine through his family to the present day. In addition, the sale will present a fine 16th century Italian Renaissance Florentine parcel-gilt walnut refectory table that was used by the Kennedys while they vacationed in the South of France during Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr.’s term as ambassador to the Court of St. James. The sale will also feature autographs of American President Abraham Lincoln and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
This remarkable sale will also present to the public numerous pieces of Asian history, including artifacts from China, Japan, Tibet, Burma, Thailand, India and many other countries. Amongst these items are several phenomenal pieces including two Chinese Han pottery horses measuring about 39in. high that have been officially dated to the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD). Bidders will also have the opportunity to purchase a rare and beautifully carved Shiva and Parvati sandstone relief stele, likely from 11th century Northern India, as well as numerous pieces of Chinese jade. Additionally, the sale will feature fine art by artists including William Aiken Walker, Alfred Heber Hutty, and Virginia Fouche Bolton.
Avid collectors will not want to miss the many opportunities this Friday and Saturday sale has to offer. The sale begins at 1pm on Friday, December 6th and 10am on Saturday, December 7th, and is available via floor bidding, phone bidding, and absentee and live Internet bidding.
