By the end of the second VIP preview day of Art Basel, Alan Cristea Gallery enjoyed consistently excellent sales, having sold works by each of the artists on display in their booth.
Works by Josef Albers, Tom Wesselmann and Jim Dine have proved particularly popular. Following the sale of a set of twelve screenprints by Albers for $110,000, on Wednesday, the gallery sold a second complete portfolio of five of the artist’s prints for 35,000 CHF. The sale of multiple works by Albers reflects a taste for abstract art which has been reported at this year’s Art Basel.
Two prints by Wesselmann - Monica Nude with Cezanne (1994) and Still life with Lillies and Mixed Fruit (1998) – sold for 34,000 CHF and 13,500 CHF respectively. The Alan Cristea Gallery will present their inaugural solo exhibition of his work in London this November. Meanwhile the gallery also sold six Jim Dine lithographs from his series Ten Hand-Coloured Winter Tools II (1973-89) for 8,800 CHF each.
Making its debut at the fair was a new series of six lightbox works by Michael Craig-Martin, which were sold on Wednesday as a full set for 30,000 CHF. Craig-Martin’s work features elsewhere at Art Basel as part of Parcours, where he is showing Hammer (blue) (2011). The lightbox series on display in Alan Cristea Gallery’s stand relates to paintings currently on show in Kunstmuseen Krefeld in Germany (until 1 September). Editions of the new lightboxes will also be shown later this year in the gallery’s forthcoming exhibition, Thirteen (10 October – 9 November).
Turner-prize nominee Dexter Dalwood’s series The Apartment (after Delacroix) I-IV (2011) was also sold, which references the hugely influential painting by Delacroix, Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement (1834). Several works from this series are currently on display as part of an ongoing retrospective of his work at Kunsthaus Centre PasquArt in Biel, Switzerland, which continues until 16 June 2013.
