Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago will hold their Spring Fine Art sales May 15th and 16th.

The Modern and Contemporary Art sale will feature an impressive selection of paintings, works on paper, sculptures and photographs by many notable artists including Victor Vasarely, Stephen Pace, Kenneth Noland, Paul Jenkins, and Fernando Botero.  

The auction commences with a strong session of abstract works. Two paintings by Stephen Pace (estimated $30/50,000 and $15/25,000 respectively) are followed by Kenneth Noland’s Cat’s Eye (estimated $30/50,000), as well as two large-scale paintings by the Chinese artist Chuang Che (estimated $15/25,000 each). Closing the session are two optical pieces by Victor Vasarely, entitled Epull and Vepar (estimated at $40/60,000 and $60/80,000 respectively). Modern and Contemporary figural works in the sale include highlights by Italian artists Ennio Morlotti, and Mario Sironi, whose allegorical work entitled La Giustizia, is being offered at $60-80,000. A female nude oil on canvas by Columbian master Fernando Botero (estimated $300/500,000) leads the session of figural works. The strong selection of Chicago Imagist pieces, including Roger Brown’s City Lake and five works by Leroy Neiman, will also be offered.

A diverse selection of sculptural works includes Claire Falkenstein’s Needle, Parviz Tanavoli’s Grey Heech and Myself, and a monumental piece by Allan Houser, entitled Prayer Song. One of only three,the Houser work, estimated at $400-600,000, portrays a seated North Plains Sioux Indian in morning prayer, bearing an eagle rattle and feather fan.

Alexander Calder’s The Handstand with Girl, from his Circus series, four original works by Salvador Dali, and a large abstract composition by Henry Moore, are among some of highlights of a strong session of works on paper. Notable photographs, including a pair of van dyke brown prints by Rashin Johnson, works by Lewis Hine, Jaromir Funke, Herbe Ritts, and a particularly fine example from Lalla Essaydi, conclude the sale.
