Ann Korologos Gallery presents Sarah Lamb: Reflections, a solo exhibition featuring dramatic still lifes by nationally acclaimed American realist painter Sarah Lamb. The exhibition is on view June 30th through July 14th at Ann Korologos Gallery in historic downtown Basalt, CO and virtually at korologosgallery.com. The exhibition is complemented by paintings, sculptures, photographs, and mixed media art by 30 contemporary Western artists.
“Every one of Lamb’s paintings activates the senses,” reflects gallery owner, Ann Korologos. “Her work inspires participation from the viewer, tempting one to feel the velvety petals of magnolias, to test one’s reflection in the metallic objects, to dip a finger in the Chantilly cream, to smell the lavender soap, or squeeze the tomatoes for ripeness. Lamb brings the viewer into the timeless moments she captures.”
Lamb is fascinated with the textures of objects, an element of joy for the artist as she searches for her next subject. In a recent interview with Western Art & Architecture, Lamb reveals her passion for depicting texture early on in her career, and her fortuitous discovery of oil paint upon taking a 2-week workshop in Santa Fe with Jacob Collins in the early 90s. That led to the introduction to Collins' mentor, Ted Seth Jacobs. The medium, in the hands of Lamb and through the guidance of her mentors, Collins and Jacobs, proved perfect to capture the color, depth, and texture of Lamb’s objects. “I’d been afraid of [oil paint],” reflects Lamb. “But once I started, it was life-changing.” Nearly 30 years later, Lamb is a nationally recognized American realist painter, considered to be one of the best contemporary painters in the United States.
Lamb always paints from life, arranging the items before her in complementary textures. With a trained classical eye and extraordinary skill, Lamb celebrates the details of everyday objects: the blossoms from her magnolia tree atop a luscious velvety surface, whimsical bouquets of orange ranunculus in a glass vase, a spring bouquet of Texas flowers tied with a crinkled raffia strip, handmade soaps stamped with horseshoes, an assortment of colorful eggs placed and reflected in a silver dish, an antique metal rooster weathervane, decadent cakes with Chantilly frosting, a silver vase of peonies whose blossoms appear in motion, light upon heirloom tomatoes gathered on a wood platter. Items that could be from the 1800s or 2021.
Lamb has had successful one-woman shows in major galleries in New York City, Atlanta, Houston, and San Francisco. She has been featured in magazines such as American Artists, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, and Western Art & Architecture as one of America's most talented young painters. British-born art critic John A. Parks wrote, "Sarah Lamb brings to her work a robustly sensual grasp of the world. Her keenness of eye and joyful brush make the whole enterprise feel freshly alive as she reminds us what the really wonderful things in life are." Sarah Lamb lives in Houston, Texas and Pennsylvania's Brandywine Valley with her husband, artist David Larned, and their daughter Sadie.
