Bethany College deaccession-items to be sold in auction in Santa Fe, Aug 13-14

Manitou Galleries is pleased to announce their 2011 “Auction In Santa Fe.” This much-anticipated sale will feature items from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas.
The fine art portion will premiere 11 artworks by Birger Sandzen (1871-1954), the “American Van Gogh,” who taught at Bethany for many years. One of the largest oils (60” x 80”) ever to be offered in auction history, entitled “Summertime in the Mountains” (1923) will command the attention of the entire art world in August. Other works by this highly collectable and distinctive artist, including a 36” x 48” oil entitled “Lake in the Rockies”, (1927) several other oils, including a pointillist style painting dated 1910, a watercolor and several of his most sought-after prints (1916-1917), will also be sold during the two-day event. History will be made as the most comprehensive and important collection of Sandzen’s works ever offered at one place at one time makes its way across the auction block.
A monumental work by Maynard Dixon (1875-1946), ironically entitled “The Monument” will also be a feature in the auction. Highly exhibited and featured in numerous books, including as the cover piece of “Maynard Dixon, Masterpieces from Brigham Young University and Private Collections, published in 2007, “The Monument” will command the attention of the entire art world as it crosses the auction block.
An extraordinary and very rare Indian subject painting entitled “Spirits of the Sunrise” by Granville Redmond (1871-1935) will also be sold. Commissioned by the Santa Fe Railway in 1903, it hung in the station in Albuquerque, NM and still bears the old SFR inventory tags.
All eyes will also be upon the 90+ piece ensemble of Indian pottery to be sold, also from Bethany College. Outstanding examples of pre-1905 pieces from the Acoma, Isleta, Zia, Zuni, Santo Domingo, San Ildefonso, Taos, Laguna, Cochiti, Tesuque and Santa Clara Pueblos will be the focal point.
Dozens of other Indian collectibles, including baskets (Western Apache ollas and trays), beadwork (moccasins, dresses and shirts, children’s items), weaponry, beaded and quilled bags and weavings will also be featured. Highlights include an 1860s Santee Sioux beaded bandolier bag, a rare Crow “keyhole” horse face ornament, A Cheyenne beaded rifle scabbard and much more!
Hundreds of other pieces of art & sculpture will be offered, including a silver gelatin print by Ansel Adams.
