Ann Korologos Gallery presents Carved, Etched, Painted, a group exhibition showcasing the various printmaking and painting techniques by Leon Loughridge, Sherrie York, Joel Ostlind, and Linda Lillegraven. The exhibition is on view May 7 through 31, 2022 at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, Colorado.

“Each artist has taken his or her medium of choice, woodblock and linocut printmaking, copper plate etching, and oil painting, to a level of mastery and personal connection to capture their observations in nature,” shares gallery owner, Ann Korologos.  “From the absolute values created when carving wood or linoleum, to the sketch-like lines of copper etching, to painting with oil, these techniques are physically rigid, yet the works are soft, light, and atmospheric.”

Leon Loughridge lives in Denver, Colorado, where he makes woodblock prints based on watercolor paintings created en plein air.  Influenced by Japanese printmaking techniques, he prefers watercolors to begin the woodblock process. The contrast in the fluidity of watercolor versus the hard lines of a wood carving is artfully translated by Loughridge. 

Sherrie York is a Colorado printmaker, painter and draughtswoman based in Maine with an international reputation for lyrical and expressive works on paper. A biologist in her 20s, York’s field sketches and drawings later translated to linocut printmaking. True to her meticulous representations of her observations in the natural world, York’s printmaker’s eye is drawn to intricate flora, the interaction of birds with water, and the patterns across land and seascapes.

Joel Ostlind is a Wyoming native and expert draftsman. Ostlind spent fifteen years herding cattle on large ranches throughout the American West, always with a sketchbook in his back pocket. His drawings found new life, with copper plate etchings as his medium, and are often hand-colored with watercolor or gouache. His subject matter depicts the full range of Western life, with his current focus on ranch hands, fishermen, log cabins, and day dreams.   

Linda Lillegraven lives in Laramie, Wyoming, and earned a BA in Art and BS in Zoology from San Diego State University. The great open landscapes of the West, with their changing light and seasons, offer the artist a lifetime of inspiration. Her oil paintings depict the transitions of color and tone of the plains, so subtle as to be “almost invisible,” yet perfectly conveyed by the hands of Lillegraven. Her landscape paintings include a minimal amount of detail while giving the viewer a sense of big skies, open fields, space and scale.
