RARE SPANISH COLONIAL SILVER TABLE (MESA RATONA) c. 1750-1800

   CRN Auctions will be conducting its Annual Spring Auction on Sunday, April 26th at 11 a.m. at their Cambridge, MA gallery. This sale of diverse items from estates and private collections spans periods from an early 14th c. French Gothic sandstone carving of the Virgin and Child to a 20th c. conoid dining table and set of 8 ‘New’ chairs by George Nakashima. This documented dining suite comes from its original owners. Several additional mid-century lots will be sold including a LaVerne coffee table.

   There are approximately 80 lots of American, European, Latin American and Asian works of art. American paintings include an unusual W. A Walker oil of field workers, as well as, a recently discovered Joseph Stone primitive portrait of a New England gentleman circa 1810. 19th and 20th c. American art is also well represented.

 An intriguing painting depicting social realism is a portrait of a prostitute by a Mexican artist Roberto Montenegro that captures the drama and perils of this life.

The French Barbizon School is represented by two 19th century paintings from the same family by noted artists Charles Daubigny and Paul Trouillebert. From a local home is a large clipper ship oil by British artist Montague Dawson (1890-1973). There are several 17th and 18th c. Old Master paintings and drawings, and two landscape oils by Dutch artist Andreas Martin (1720-1767).

Two private collections are featured, one of Spanish Colonial silver from a Connecticut gentleman who collected while residing in Latin America for several years. Part of this fine collection was sold by CRN Auctions in 2014. Also, the third and final part of the David Abbate estate offered is his collection of Japanese samurai armor and armaments. In May of 2014, CRN Auctions sold Mr. Abbate’s magnificent collection of all that was Italian Renaissance.

   American antique furniture highlights are a pair of New York classical stenciled card tables, and an impressive 19th c. Salem Federal breakfront with ornate eglomise panels. Antique American and British accessories are abundant including Chinese Export porcelains.

From a Cambridge, MA estate come several items including an 18th c. Northern Italian walnut Rococo secretary purchased during travels to Italy in the 1950’s. A fine pair of Napoleon III boulle and ormolu mounted cabinets come from the Amy Lowell family home in Brookline, Ma. Silver includes a Georg Jensen Blossom pattern tea service with its original tray. Also being sold are Japanese items from a Cambridge estate and a Providence, RI collection; 20 lots of Oriental carpets are highlighted by a roomsize Herati pattern Bidjar, and several Caucasian and Persian scatters.
