Lawrence Fine Art will mark the 50th anniversary of acclaimed Pop artist Marjorie Strider's first show with a retrospective and exhibition of new works, to open June 26th with an opening reception June 28th at the gallery's East Hampton location.  Lawrence Fine Art will also exhibit Strider's work at Art Southampton from July 24-28th. The gallery will offer a "meet and greet" with the artist at Art Southampton on Friday, July 25.

The Strider show will be titled "The Second International Girlie Show".  The title references the first show Strider ever received, at Pace Gallery in 1964, which was called "The First International Girlie Show." Among the works the gallery will show are a new series of three-dimensional wall paintings.

"Strider's contribution to the development of Pop Art is on a par with Wesselman, Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Wayne Thiebaud or any of the other important male artists of that era.  However, being a woman, she received less notice than did they," said Shapiro.

"Her depictions of the female form slyly ask us to question our art historical assumptions regarding the form," said Shapiro.  "In that sense, they are revolutionary."

The artist’s oeuvre has been the subject of extensive art critical writings.  She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a grant from the Pollock/Krasner Foundation.  Her work can be found in numerous museum collections.

"Fifty years after women really began to make their mark in the art world, the Strider exhibition is a good place to stop, pause and ask:  How far have we come and where do we go from here," said Shapiro.
