Dallas Auction Gallery announces its spring, American and European Fine Art and Sculpture sale on May 20th at 6PM CST in the Dallas Design District, 2235 Monitor Street. DAG’s highly anticipated spring sale offers even more sizzle this year, featuring a selection of pieces from the collection of Dallas entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist, Sam Wyly.

Mr. Wyly’s collection includes works by well-known American artists such as Norman Rockwell, Frank Tenney Johnson, Rembrandt Peale, and Fred Darge.

“George Washington” by Rembrandt Peale. Oil on canvas. (presale estimate $125,000-$175,000.00)

Mr. Wyly’s collection also includes “Old Pedro the Goat Herder” by popular Texas artist, Fred Darge, an oil on canvas by Joe Jones, and “American White Pelican” after John James Audubon.

Mr. Wyly began reducing his estate over 40 years ago with the creation of family and charitable trusts and gifts to schools and colleges and other charitable entities ranging from dog shelters to soup kitchens.  Dallas Auction Gallery competed with multiple international auction houses for the opportunity to represent Mr. Wyly in divesting pieces from his collection.

“We are honored that Mr. Wyly has chosen Dallas Auction Gallery to bring his collection to the worldwide market.  It’s gratifying to be considered among the top auction houses internationally, and a special pleasure to assist such a renowned business legend, with deep local roots, in his estate planning.”                                                                            - - Scott Shuford, President, Dallas Auction Gallery

The May 20th sale will also include outstanding pieces by contemporary artists Mel Bochner, Robert Indiana, Alexander Calder, Chen Yiming, and Callum Innes, and sculptures by Harry Bertoia and John Chamberlain. The sale will be held on May 20th at 6PM CST. Preview will begin on May 18th or by appointment. Bidding is available in person, by telephone and online through DallasAuctionGallery.com and LiveAuctioneers.com.

Mr. Wyly has created and built a number of companies, in both public and private sectors. Following computer technology jobs with IBM and Honeywell, he started University Computing, in 1963, in partnership with Sun Oil Company and Southern Methodist University.  In 2000, Mr. Wyly sold Sterling Software and Sterling Commerce for $8 billion, and in 2006, sold Michaels Stores for $6 billion.  His companies were pioneers in the software and nationwide digital services that have come to be called the internet.  His Datran was one of three competitors that busted up the U.S. telephone monopoly into eight companies competing with one another. In addition to being a successful business man, Mr. Wyly is a proud family man, with a family of 31 (and counting), plus 15 on the side of his late brother, Charles. He is also an author with over 850,000 books in print. His entrepreneurial stories are 1,000 Dollars & An Idea, and Beyond Tallulah. His book, Texas Got It Right!, on Texas history and political economics, was many months on the Amazon best seller lists. He will shortly publish an American history and national policy book, Immigrants Enrich Us All.
