Davenport and Shapiro Fine Art will present new works from Linda Newman Boughton’s “Civil War” series beginning Saturday, August 4^th at its East Hampton Gallery.

Boughton mixes what appear to be elements of photography, etching and pop art in what are actually pen drawings loosely based on Matthew Brady’s iconic civil war photos.

“Linda is an amazing portraitist,” says gallery Co-Director Howard Shapiro.  “The works’ large size—they are about five feet high—gives them an amazing combination of immediacy, gravitas and ironic humor.”

Originally a scenic artist painting sets and murals for movies (including One Fine Day, Fight Club and Austin Powers), Linda Boughton has evolved into a singular portraitist who can conjure up emotion and with a growing reputation among the Hollywood cognoscenti.

Among the portraits in the series are Abraham Lincoln and Mary Chestnut. “They are both haunting and ironic,” explains Co-Director Len Davenport.  “Letter from Home captures all the poignancy of the lonely soldier far from home. Once you’ve seen them, you’ll know why we had to exhibit them.  We’ve already had a strong reaction.”
