Ask anyone at The Cooley Gallery if mermen exist and they would emphatically say "no," but not because they lack imagination or a fantasy life. If mermen existed Connecticut artist Chandler Davis would not have two legs and be walking on land.
Chandler is a gentle, unassuming soul. He is a missionary for the natural world and all things of the sea. He built an international reputation as an artist with his large scale mollusk sculptures. Some of these can be seen down the street in Old Lyme at Studio 80+ Sculpture Grounds, www.sculpturegrounds.com . Chandler’s nautili, conches and mussels, rendered at “human” scale, are significant. A gargantuan mussel at eye level commands consideration and that is exactly what Chandler wants.
The Cooley Gallery is proud to announce Waves, an exhibition and sale of new paintings by Chandler Davis, opens April 2nd. In this exhibition the artist goes back to the source, the ocean. Eight large wave paintings of luminous waves in a variety of weather and light conditions depict some of the many moods of the ocean.
In addition to Chandler’s paintings the gallery will exhibit other marine and ocean art.
Waves will be celebrated with an opening reception on Thursday, April 2nd from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. The public is welcome. On view through May 2nd.
