After a successful launch earlier this year, The Mayfair Antiques & Fine Art Fair organised by The Antiques Dealers Fair Limited, takes place for a second time at the beginning of next year - from Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 January 2014 at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square, London W1K 6JP. Run in association with international property specialists Wetherell, some 45 specialist dealers offer a wealth of riches across the four days.

“We were delighted that so many interested buyers came to our first London fair from here and abroad,” said Ingrid Nilson, director of The Antiques Dealers Fair Limited. “We had such lovely comments from people saying that it was quite unique, totally different from other London fairs, very informal and relaxed.  With the support of our exhibitors, over 90% of whom are returning, we intend to organise another impressive and welcoming event at this prestigious venue in January 2014.”

The visitors to this boutique event can find antique and designer jewellery, clocks and vintage watches, silver, Art Deco pieces, fine antique and country furniture, Oriental and European textiles and carpets, oil and watercolour paintings, contemporary and antique sculptures, original book illustrations, ceramics and British art pottery, old maps and prints, antique boxes, glass, antiquarian books and objets d’art.

Interesting and unusual items at the fair include a late 19th century example of Indo-Portuguese art, a turtle shell with dragon head on engraved silver with bronze legs, £2,000, and an Edo period Jingasa (Japanese military hat) in lacquered wood with the maruni mitsu aoi flower (hollyhock), the Tokugawa family crest, which was also associated with the Tokugawa shogunate, £2,500 both to be found on Piergabriele Vangelli Gallery’s stand. A large Bohemian glass tankard, beautifully engraved with ‘The Last Supper’ and annotated ‘zum Andenhen an Franz Deichmann’ is selling for £1,280 from Mark J West.  Galerie Arabesque is bringing exquisite textiles, sculptures and objets d’art, including a Chinese writing table showing carved dragon spandrels with the curlicues and elongated shapes that have been used in Chinese art from early times.  The table was used by a scholar, a highly respected profession in China, and bears the marks resulting from writing and sealing letters, £4,500. 

Jewellery is always a draw and there is plenty to savour including a delightful Peking glass flower brooch set in platinum, POA, and a fancy yellow cut diamond ring with small white diamonds in the shoulders, set in 18 ct gold, £48,000 from Anthea AG Antiques. T Robert’s selection of antique jewellery and objets d’art includes an 18ct gold Holbeinesque emerald, enamel and multi-gem set pendant, c1870, £8,850 and a finely engraved and pierced ruby and diamond Bombay ring set in platinum, c1925, £7,550.  Purveyor of vintage watches, Anthony Green Antiques has an extremely rare handsome and elegant 1943 Patek Philippe gentleman’s wristwatch in rose gold, complete with authentication, priced at £25,000.

For those who entertain large numbers of people, Walton House Antiques has a superb set of 20 William IV satinbirch armchairs, c 1835, priced at £22,000.  Oak specialist Peter Bunting is bringing a Continental early carved two-door cupboard, c1570, selling for £6,500.  WR Harvey & Co (Antiques) Ltd  has an impressive William and Mary period oyster veneered kingwood kneehole desk by Thomas Pistor of Ludgate Hill, c1690, priced at £50,000, and a Chippendale period mahogany ‘spider-leg’ table, c1760 and priced at £3,500.  This table was part of the collection of JS Sykes of Grosvenor Square, who was one of a close circle of British and American collectors of Georgian furniture.

Remaining on the theme of Grosvenor Square, Angelika CJ Friebe Ltd is bringing a vue d’optique, originally developed in France and popular with collectors during the 18th and 19th centuries.  This original hand coloured copper engraving Vue de la Place de Grosvenor à Londres was published in England in 1766, and is selling for £450 (framed).  Keeping with the London theme, Peter Bunting has a gesso on canvas showing a London scene, Lambeth Palace on the River, English, c1800, and priced at £3,500.

The fair’s exhibitors are exclusively drawn from members of The British Antique Dealers’ Association and LAPADA The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers.  This boutique event entices a discerning international audience of collectors, interior designers and those who appreciate surrounding themselves with beautiful things.
