Maintain the fresh feeling of summer all year round with an antique textile in a shade of blue combined with white. This perennial favorite color ranges from the deepest indigo to the gentlest weathered denim to the evocative blues of morning or evening.
At FISHER HERITAGE in NYC, find your blue in owner Laura Fisher’s antique quilts, hand woven American coverlets and blankets, and indigo dyed Japanese and African textiles. Air Force blue, Alice blue, azure, baby blue, sky blue, cerulean, cobalt, cornflower, cyan, electric blue, indigo, iris, midnight blue, navy, oxford, periwinkle, and Persian blue are some of the familiar, picturesque names given to the variety of blues that emerge from natural indigo dye throughout the world.
Indigo is the plant source of the color blue, used in the U.S. and worldwide for centuries. The term true blue implies love and loyalty; its derives from textile production in Coventry England and refers to the colorfastness of blue dyes. Remarkably, much early indigo cloth retains its blue color today that reads as fresh as when first dyed.
FISHER HERITAGE always has a veritable rainbow of blue hues for you to choose from, among them:
*Classic American pieced quilts in the crisp fresh blue and white palette, with pattern names lik, Oak Leaf and Reel, Hole in the Barn Door, Trees, etc
*Monochromatic pieced quilts made of washed denim scraps that have a chic modernist aesthetic
*Early 19th century whole cloth ‘Linsey-Woolsey’ quilts in deep deep indigo
*Jacquard coverlets made in the mid 19th century by collectible weavers including David Haring (NJ), James Alexander and James Impson (NY), and W Craig (IN)
*Hand woven double weave geometric coverlets and overshot blankets in graphic blues from the looms of anonymous weavers
*International textiles including Japanese sashiko cottons, indigo dyed with paste resist decoration, and hand woven pieced men’s and women’s African wrapping cloths from the Cameroons and Ghana
*Amish Pennsylvania rag carpet rolls - primarily blue woven with solid color clothing strips
* hooked rugs that read mostly blue - infrequently seen, choice examples with indigo and Prussian blue (19th century) as well as softer blues (up to mid-20th century).
Any shade of blue in these select antique textiles could become your unique, memorable heirloom, so do stop by during shop hours: Monday through Friday ( best times are 11-4) or call first for an appointment.
