A mid-week auction featuring over 500 lots of rare and unusual dinosaur fossils and minerals, antique advertising items, a collection of Black Americana and Part 2 of a great ice cream collection will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15th, by Philip Weiss Auctions, in the firm’s gallery at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook. The first gavel will fall at 1 p.m. Eastern time.

“Fossils and minerals are red-hot as collectibles right now, and I’m proud to be offering a fine selection in this auction,” said Philip Weiss of Philip Weiss Auctions. “We’re looking forward to a great sale.” For those unable to attend the auction in person, internet bidding will be facilitated by Proxibid.com and Invaluable.com. Telephone and absentee (left) bids will also be accepted.

Fossils will feature a museum-quality bear dog skull, a huge prehistoric crocodile skull and neck vertebrae, a Brazilian fish fossil, an articulated Mosasaur paddle, two unhatched Raptor eggs, a fossil frog, the 14-inch jaw section from a Basilosaurus fossil, a Trilobite, a Cretaceous-period 75-million-year-old Prograthodon Curril fossil found in Morocco and a Triceratops brow horn.

The selection of minerals will be just as broad and impressive. Lots include a very large Azurite specimen, a massive sulfur stalagmite, a gigantic Wulfenite specimen, a huge natural smoky quartz crystal, a gem quality Ammonite and more. “The minerals and fossils in this sale aren’t just astounding to look at and hold, they’re truly museum-quality collectibles,” Mr. Weiss said.

The wonderful assortment of antique advertising items will feature Part 2 of the John Panza ice cream collection. Lots will include a rare heart-shaped ice cream scoop, ice cream molds, two Eskimo Pie counter coolers, ice cream serving and spoon sets, ice cream sundae glasses with sterling silver bases and more. “Part 1 was a big hit. Part 2 will be just as good,” Weiss said.

Advertising pieces will feature a tin litho “Cheer Up” sign, a Reddy Kilowatt sign, a tin litho Coca-Cola sign, a Scull’s Coffee counter tin, a “Just Wright Shoe” early trunk, a Dwinell-Wright Coffee counter tin and more. The Black Americana will include a wind-up trade stimulator figure, tin litho toys, celluloid toys, porcelains, banks, paper ephemera, prints, books and more.

On Sunday, Oct. 5th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.n. Eastern time, Philip Weiss Auctions will hold a Free Appraisal Day, in the firm’s Lynbrook gallery. “Before you give your items away at a tag sale, estate sale or on eBay, find out what they’re really worth by getting a free appraisal by our team of knowledgeable experts,” Mr. Weiss said, adding, “but please, no furniture or jewelry items.”

People are encouraged to bring stamps, coins, toys, trains, rare books, military material, comics and comic art, sports memorabilia, sports cards and non-sports cards, paintings, pottery, sterling silver, porcelain and general collectibles. Appraisals will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, and Philip Weiss Auctions asks that people limit their number of appraisal items to three.
