Eldred’s annual Contemporary Paintings Auction on August 20 will include more than 180 works by contemporary artists, including many well-known Cape Cod painters. Part of the auction proceeds will be donated to the Turlough “Mighty” Meehan Research Foundation, which funds pediatric leukemia research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The auction is preceded by a cocktail reception preview open to the public beginning at 4 p.m.
Three paintings by Joseph McGurl, including a view of Nantucket’s Polpis Harbor, “Reliance off Sandy Hook” by Timothy Franklin Ross Thompson, three boating scenes by Thomas Russell Dunlay, and Michael Keane’s “Brant Point Rainbows” are some of the featured lots in the sale. Other Cape Cod artists represented include Robert Cardinal, Sam Barber, William R. Davis, Elizabth Mumford, Ryan Cooper, Barbara Wylan and Robert K. Roark.
Other highlights include “Seasongs II 2008” depicting fishermen hauling nets by Leonard Everett Fisher, “A Day in the Sun” by Paul Balmer, a still life by George Van Hook and two expansive yachting scenes by Richard K. Loud. The auction will conclude with a selection of paintings by North Shore artists.
With a full complement of mediums, styles and sizes of artwork being offered and pre-auction estimates falling within a wide range of price points, the Contemporary Paintings Auction provides both novice auction-goers and serious curators a chance to add to their collections while also supporting a good cause.
A portion of the auction proceeds will go to Eldred’s charitable partner, the Turlough Meehan Research Foundation, which was created in 2007 by Amanda-Clare Cunningham and Phelim Meehan after their infant son passed away from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) when he was just six months old. Infant ALL is a rare form of cancer and is fatal in half of all cases. Money raised by the Turlough Meehan Research Foundation, is earmarked exclusively for Infant ALL studies, with the hopes of identifying the cause of the disease and discovering a cure for it. The Foundation also conducts bone marrow drives and organizes the MM5K, a popular fundraising road race held on Cape Cod each September. This is the second year Eldred’s has partnered with the Foundation.
“In his own short life, Turlough Meehan touched the lives of so many people here in our community. Eldred’s is honored to partner with an organization working so hard to ensure no other family suffers the same loss,” said Josh Eldred, vice president and director of the Contemporary Paintings Auction. “We look forward to raising a lot of money for this important charity. With so many works by local artists included in the sale, it’s also a great opportunity to support the vibrant arts community here on Cape Cod. We hope customers will join us at our cocktail reception preview at our gallery starting at 4 p.m. August 20th.”
The auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. Both the cocktail reception preview and the auction will take place at the company’s main facility located 1483 Route 6A, in East Dennis, Massachusetts. Interested bidders can visit www.eldreds.com for a complete sale listing and to register to bid via phone, absentee bid or online. Those wishing to bid live in the audience may register at the offices the day of the auction.
