On August 29, in the tony Cleveland suburb of Gates Mills, Garth’s Auctioneers & Appraisers will conduct a one day on-site auction of the estate of the late Dr. Floyd (“Fred”) Loop. From 1989 through 2004, Dr. Loop served as CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, turning a $30M deficit into a $30M surplus within his first year in the position. Under Dr. Loop’s leadership, the Cleveland Clinic underwent massive expansion to become one of the world’s leading medical centers. As a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Loop operated on thousands of patients, including international political and business leaders. Dr. Loop’s late wife, Dr. Bernadine Healy, was also a renowned leader in the medical field - having led the National Institutes of Health, serving as President of the American Red Cross and working as an adviser to President Ronald Reagan.
Together, Drs. Loop and Healy amassed an impressive collection of artwork, collectibles, antiques and fine furnishings. Among the items to be auctioned are many works of art including oils on canvas, watercolors, and bronze sculptures. An oil on canvas by 19th Century American artist, Emanuel Leutze, is a sensitive portrait of mother, child, and nurse expected to sell for $5,000 - $10,000. German-born and German-trained, Leutze is best known for two iconic American paintings: Washington Crossing the Delaware and Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way. His work is fairly rare, with only one or two examples coming to auction each year for the past decade. Noteworthy sales include Departure of Columbus from Palos in 1492 for $1.1 million in 2011, and Last of the Mohicans for $2.1 million in 2007.
An oil on canvas titled The Post Girl depicts the receiving of news by rider or post - a subject often painted by the artist, Heywood Hardy (British, 1843-1933). Similar paintings by Hardy have sold between $5,000 - $15,000. Dozens of paintings and sculptures will be offered in the rare, offline format of an onsite auction including works by Hugh Carter (United Kingdom, 1837-1903), Carl Philipp Weber (Germany/Pennsylvania, 1850-1921), C.J. Barber (ex Schwartz Gallery, Philadelphia), Ernest Wahlberg, Nellie Knopf (Illinois/California/Michigan, 1875-1962), William Shayer (England, 1787-1879), Joseph Edgar Boehm (England, 1834-1890), W.H. Knight (England, 1823-1863) Michel Bouquet (France, 1807-1890), Frank Dean (United Kingdom, 1865-1946), Antoine-Louis Barye (France, 1795-1875), Peggy Mach, Pierre Jules Mene (France, 1810-1879), Frederick Sackrider Remington (New York/Kansas, 1861-1909), Helen Riddell Mee, and others.
Antique, handwoven oriental rugs remain a hot selling category. Among the Loop-Healy collection is a palace size antique rug with Arabic inscriptions woven into the pattern expected to bring $3000-5000. With more than 50 rugs selling in the auction, buyers will find many handwoven wool and silk rugs from which to choose.
Drs. Loop and Healy clearly had an appreciation for traditional American style. Most of the furniture in their home is from well-known luxury makers including Henredon, Baker, Maitland Smith, Stickley and Henkel Harris. Made by Henredon, the dining room set includes chairs in the Queen Anne style and a table and breakfront cabinet in the Chippendale style. Not technically a matched “set,” the pieces will be sold separately (breakfront, table, set of 8 chairs), and should bring, in total, more than $5,000. Furniture offerings within the auction are extensive, as one would expect in a large home: chests, tables, chairs, cupboards and more - all in a timeless and sophisticated style.
Due to their global medical and humanitarian work, Drs. Loop and Healy accumulated a sizable collection of gifts from foreign governments and dignitaries. Many presentation items are included in the auction, including a bronze of a little girl and her teddy bear given to the Loop-Healy family by President Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos. Sports lovers will be happy to find signed footballs from Peyton Manning and Al Lerner, while political buffs will appreciate articles from Camp David.
Not surprisingly, the Loop-Healy auction will include a large quantity of sterling silver, crystal and fine china from Reed & Barton, Waterford, Rosenthal, Haviland, Tiffany, Royal Worcester, Villeroy & Boch, and Fiesta. Lalique and Baccarat animals abound, as well as vases by Orrefors, Belleek and Simon Pearce. Period objects include delft plates, cut overlay items and more.
The public is invited to attend the auction on August 29, 2015 beginning at 10:00 AM EDT. Public preview hours will be Friday, August 28 from 3:00 PM through 6:00 PM and the morning of the auction from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. at the Loop-Healy Residence (near Cleveland), 710 County Line Road, Gates Mills, Ohio. Absentee and phone bid will be accepted. For more information about the auction, visit garths.com or call 740.362.4771.
