Enoch Perry Oil on Canvas
Clarke Auction

Clarke Auction of Larchmont, New York welcomes the New Year with a marvelous selection of Fine Art on Sunday January 6th at 2pm. The collection includes nearly one hundred works of art that range from works of Old Masters to the late 20th Century American.

The American selection is of particular note and includes a large lot of American Artist Group prints.  The lot is comprised of over 40 un-cataloged prints. Individual artists in the grouping include Reginald Marsh, Joe Jones, and Paul Landacre.  Another lot of 40 prints by various artists will also be in the sale.

Beyond prints, the late 19th/early 20th Century American paintings include a distinct portrait of a dog by Percival Rosseau, a Louis Ritter oil of Capri, George Innes oil on canvas board landscape, a John F. Carlson winter landscape oil painting, a primitive early American portrait, and a work by American female artist Gertrude McKim Whiting.

One particular painting of high detail and quality by Perry Enoch depicts a seated man in profile holding a baby.  Enoch Perry is most renowned for his patriotic paintings depicting American life.  In the 1870s Perry worked closely with another highly acclaimed American artist, Winslow Homer and together they created a style of natural and realistic interpretations of the American way through symbolic representations of historical and political events.

The painting by Perry in the upcoming January 6th sale is dated from 1870 - 1875, and is encased by what is believed to be the original frame. The frame itself is worth mentioning because of its superior quality. It is complete with a fluted cove ascending to floral corners and an intricately incised rectangular design with fleur-de-lis motif around an original liner. The entire frame has original gilt with only minor losses and is a remarkable compliment to a fine work of art.

Mark Tobey Abstract Painting

In the more recent American fine art selection, the works of Mark Tobey and Stephen Ettinger stand out.  Two abstract works on paper by Mark Tobey will be sold individually.  The Mark Tobey's abstract works are highly successful in evoking emotion in the viewer and the use of color and line abstraction make these pieces as individual as the artist himself.

Stephen Ettinger, and American artist have been underestimated in the past, has 5 works in the upcoming sale.  Presenting these fresh to market works just might be able to sway perceptions of collectors. There are 3 examples of reclining nudes, one portrait of a woman with a small crown, and a depiction of factory workers entitled "The Glass Blowers, Venice." The works are offered to market by a personal friend of Ettinger.

There are several notable 20th Century African American artists that have pieces in the sale as well. A rare lithograph by Romare Bearden, a colorful winter street scene oil by Ben Hollis, and an abstract color field painting by Hubert Taylor are available on Sunday, January 6th at 2pm.

Moving across the sea and into the days of yore, the European fine art also provides a continental selection at the upcoming sale.  Of particular note by Old Masters are four fresh to market Rembrandt Van Rijin etchings, and large oil on canvas depicting the "Adoration of the Magi."

Also in the European selection, a French beach scene by Gaston Sabire, a ball scene by Jean Cosson, a beautiful portrait of young girl by British artist George Knowles, watercolor works by British artists Walter Langley and Fredrick Smallfield, and an oil on canvas entitled "The Flirtation" by Frederico Andreotti.  Especially

Joan Miro Signed Lithograph

Other than paintings, litho posters are also offered in the upcoming January 6th Sale at Clarke Auction. Lithos from Tolouse Lautrec, Fernand Gottlob, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen, and Marc Chagall, will all be presented for sale.

Another important lithograph, although not a poster, is a pencil signed work by Joan Miro.  A work by Miro sold for $36,000 last month at Clarke Auction and the importance of Miro's art continues to rise.

Besides fine art there are over 300 lots of furniture, bronzes, sterling silver, midcentury modern, and much more.
