[BOSTON, MA] Grogan & Company’s annual Spring Fine Art and Jewelry Auction will take place on Sunday, May 1 at 11am. The auction features a curated offering of over 200 lots of fine art and jewelry, and will be live-streamed from the company’s Boston headquarters.
The fine art portion of the sale includes a strong selection of works by notable 19th and 20th-century American artists. The sale is led by a newly re-discovered Mardsen Hartley painting entitled Wild White Rose ($50,000-80,000). The work was painted in 1936, a pivotal year in Hartley’s oeuvre, and it reflects his deep sadness at the loss of his friends at sea earlier that summer. Hartley became fascinated with the wild roses that grow along the Atlantic sea coast, repeatedly incorporating the rose motif into his work as a memorial to his friends. Wild White Rose remained in the collection of the artist until his death, following which it was purchased by a private collector. The work has hung in the home of the collector’s family since 1960, its whereabouts unknown to Hartley scholars until now.
Other paintings by Maine artists include James Edward Fitzgerald’s iconic watercolor Monhegan Burial ($5,000-10,000) and Marguerite Thompson Zorach’s bright, bold, geometric landscape painting entitled Mountainside Road ($6,000-9,000). Zorach was a pioneer in American modernism, and this painting expresses the influence of both Fauvism and Cubism on her work. Other notable landscapes include a spring view of Cambridge by Grandma Moses measuring 18 x 24 in. ($50,000-80,000), and a serene view of the Shetucket River by Julian Alden Weir measuring 19 x 23 in. ($7,000-9,000),
Other important works by American artists in the sale include Frank Duvenek’s portrait of fellow artist Theodore Wendell ($6,000-12,000), a drawing study of hands by John Singer Sargent ($5,000-8,000), floral paintings by John Furguson Weir ($7,000-9,000) and Abbott Fuller Graves ($8,000-12,000), a striking interior scene by Walter Gay ($3,000-5,000), and a family portrait by James Shannon ($6,000-8,000).
Notable European works include a 1935 Lyonel Feininger watercolor and ink painting entitled The Bark with Flag measuring 7 3/4 x 11 1/2 in. ($10,000-20,000) and two paintings by Rudolf Wacker, a leader of Austria’s New Objectivity and Magic Realism movements. The two Wacker paintings come by direct descent within the artist’s family to the current owners.
The jewelry portion of the sale includes important signed pieces, such as a custom Van Cleef & Arpels suite designed in Paris for a fortieth birthday. The suite includes two lots, gold and diamond ‘Fuschia’ earclips ($50,000-70,000) and a gold and diamond ‘Fuschia’ pendant/brooch and necklace ($60,000-80,000). Other signed pieces include pieces by Tiffany & Company, Trabert & Hoeffer Mauboussin, J.E. Caldwell, Bailey Banks & Biddle, and a range of signed Cartier pieces. The Cartier pieces include a tricolor gold and diamond Cartier ‘Trinity’ ring ($5,000-7,000), a gold, lacquer, and diamond ‘Panthère de Cartier' ring ($3,000-5,000), a gold ‘Love’ bracelet ($2,000-4,000), an Art Deco silver pegasus figure humidor ($20,000-40,000), a gold, diamond, and velvet framed mirror ($10,000-15,000), and a gold and diamond ‘Roadster’ wristwatch ($6,000-10,000). The sale also includes a Rolex Daytona stainless steel chronograph wristwatch in excellent condition ($15,000-20,000).
The auction also features a series of fine diamond rings, including a platinum and diamond ring centering a 5.19 cts. E, VVS2 round brilliant-cut diamond flanked by baguette-cut diamonds ($60,000-80,000) and platinum and diamond ring centering a 6 cts. Other items from this estate include a Tiffany & Company Schlumberger ring, a series of gold and diamond bow brooches, and a platinum and diamond Riviere Necklace ($15,000-20,000).
