The Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present Diaries, an exhibition of recent paintings by Brad Marshall, opening 26 April and continuing through 26 May 2012. There will be an opening reception for the Artist, Thursday, April 26 from 5 to 7P.M. This is Marshall’s fifth solo exhibition at The Fischbach Gallery.
The panoramic views in Brad Marshall’s paintings are more than just records of his travels. Similar to nineteenth century Hudson River School painters, Marshall is attracted to dramatic locations. Marshall’s art work is a translation of the emotional response triggered when in the presence of sprawling nature and grandiose man-made structures. Marshall has made extensive use of his camera while traveling, but relies on memory to serve as the scaffolding for his composite images. In this sense Marshall’s experiential knowledge plays as important a role as representational exactitude.
The paintings in Diaries come from the extensive locations Marshall has traveled. However, they are not meant to be a simple travelogue, or post cards from the road. “Whether it’s a small, quiet spot or a grander vista, I choose these scenes to paint because they presented a view that said to me ‘Here is a painting.’ The viewer may be familiar with the locale or not, but it is important that the images have a beauty of their own. These paintings hopefully convey a sense of place, not just to show that I have been there, but to evoke the feelings I had when I felt compelled to turn the landscape into paintings. My goal is not to say ‘look where I have been’, but rather to put the viewer in my place as I looked, to capture some of the beauty I felt. “ -Marshall 2012
Born in 1955, Marshall trained in painting and illustration at the San Francisco Academy of Art.
He currently resides in New York City.
