Mr. Brainwash, the popular Banksy protégé, shows new works at GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL. Mr. Brainwash, became famous through the film "Exit Through the Gift Shop" directed by Banksy. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2011. Mr. Brainwash now also has famous collectors and fans like Pope Francis and the Kardashians. He and designed the cover for Madonna's Celebration album in 2009.
The exhibition will feature his major works Everyday Life - Follow Your Dreams, Einstein, Banksy Thrower, Balloon Girl or Charlie Chaplin. Unique works on paper in mixed media and stencil technique. As always at Mr. Brainwash with lots of spray paint under the title "Life is Beautiful".
GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL represents the artist Mr. Brainwash in the German-speaking region since 2012. In the branch in Kitzbühel, works by Mr. Brainwash have been shown regularly during the winter months for the past three years.
After the auction record in London for a Banksy painting at Sothebys in London, street art is increasingly becoming the focus of collectors. Collectors are not only interested in unique pieces, but also in editions as long as they are original. Whether the art is purchased as an investment or just to look at is secondary.
Born in 1966 as Thierry Guetta in Garges-lès-Gonesse near Paris, he has lived in Los Angeles since the age of 15. In 2008, the first exhibition "Life is Beautiful" took place in Los Angeles and quickly became a crowd puller with more than 50,000 visitors.
In 2009 Madonna commissioned Mr. Brainwash to design the album cover "Celebration". The unique piece was also available for purchase as a canvas.
In 2010 came the breakthrough: Mr. Brainwash became famous through the multiple award-winning and Oscar-nominated documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop", in which he accompanied his friend and street art legend Banksy at work. This also got him into the street art scene and he started creating artwork. He was already making unique pieces and editions at that time. From that moment on, Mr. Brainwash was a phenomenon, a superstar who conquered the art world with his originals at a record pace. The unique pieces and originals can be bought in the gallery in Kitzbühel as well as in Nuremberg. Some people buy the works of Mr. Brainwash simply as an investment, although the pictures are much too beautiful to serve simply as a capital investment.
In February 2010, the second exhibition "Life Is Beautiful: Icons" opened in New York on 1,400 m2 and was sold out after a few days.
Numerous exhibitions followed in England, Germany, France and most recently in Seoul. A lengthy interview has just been published in Paris Match.
Using stencil graffiti as well as silkscreen prints and pop culture motifs analogous to Warhol, the artist has brought urban art from the street into the living room, merging the two art movements. The surprising works such as Juxtapose, F.Y.D. Everyday Life, Einstein, Kate Moss, Life is Beautiful or Balloon Girl mix garish colors in any combination with sometimes controversial content. The whole executed in mixed media with spray paint, painting and collage technique and enriched with ironic allusions, behind which often hides a political-social message.
