Clarke Auction’s first sale of the year will present a mob of antiques and statuary from a Oyster Bay, NY estate featured in The Godfather film trilogy.
There were no horse’s heads to be found decorating the estate’s interior, but Clarke did acquire a magnificent antique parquetry inlaid, ormolu mounted, and leather top bureau plat. The Francois Linke quality desk is adorned with the highest quality bronze work, and is one of two desks from the estate to be estimated at $3,000/$5,000.
The second desk is another piece worthy only of the most respected Don. Clarke will feature a 19th century mahogany Carlton desk. The desk is in remarkable condition and will also be listed at $3,000/$5,000.
In the estate’s garden, where business can be discussed freely, many large marble statues adorned the expansive lawn and walkways. Clarke will feature the most important and beautiful items from the garden in the January 11th sale. The pieces were all original to the estate, and there are several scenes in Godfather 3 in which the pedestal arrangements are clearly visible.
All pieces will completely displayed and visible online and during in-house previews on January 9th and 10th. And let me tell you something, if you don’t preview, it may break your brother’s heart. You should never take sides against the gallery.
The estate’s outdoor selections also include 5 separate planting urns of antique marble, decorated with swag and fruit garland decoration. Beyond the appeal of a Hollywood cameo, the works have genuine market value as antique works. They each have exceptional weight, high quality carving, and may prove to be big earners for the capo (i.e. the consignor). Each urn will be auctioned individually with reasonable estimates of $1,000/$1,500.
Several statues of classical design will be also be sold on January 11th. Clarke will present a magnificent square tapered column pedestal with classical bust of a woman estimated at $3,000/$4,000, and her mate, a classical bearded head on matching square column, also listed at $3,000/$4,000. An antique marble figure holding a book will be offered along with his mate, or maybe his goumada, a figure on pedestal holding a scroll (*See main article image). Each figure will be auctioned separately for $3,000/$4,000 each.
Additional items from interior and garden will also be featured from the estate including a pair of glorious antique Continental gilded rococo style mirrors, and much more.
