Botero Highlights April 20 Latin American Art Auction at Doyle

Doyle Auctioneers & Appraisers will hold an auction of Latin American Art on Tuesday, April 20 at 2pm EDT. The sale will showcase paintings, drawings and sculpture by prominent artists of the 20th century.
The public is invited to the exhibition on view April 17-19 at Doyle, located at 175 East 87th Street in New York. The catalogue may be viewed online at DOYLE.com
Fernando Botero
Highlighting the sale is an important work on canvas by the legendary Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Niña from 1961 reflects his early approach to the exaggerated figures for which he is best known. In this lush painting, Botero is bold, gestural and painterly, his delightful subject with toy sword appears both impish and regal (est. $175,000-225,000).
Claudio Bravo
Referencing Renaissance and Baroque painting techniques, Chilean artist Claudio Bravo is renowned for his photorealistic works. A 1987 still life is a prime example of Bravo’s embrace of Caravaggio’s expert handling of light and texture (est. $80,000-120,000).
Diego Rivera
One of two works by the famed Mexican Muralist featured in the sale, a 1941 gouache by Diego Rivera depicts a woman pulling her donkey, with child strapped to her back. Rivera strove to gracefully reflect the common people of his native Mexico in their daily lives (est. 30,000-50,000).
Rufino Tamayo
A watercolor of two women working in a field by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo shares the honest sensibilities of the folk art native to his Zapotecan Indian heritage. Tamayo often found himself at odds with the social commentary of his Mexican Muralist peers, as he was more interested in bringing Cubist and Surrealist influences to modern Mexican art (est. $20,000-40,000).
Angel Botello
Puerto Rican master Angel Botello is highly regarded for his bright, illustrative depictions of swan-necked women and cherubic children. Often referred to as the “Gauguin of the Caribbean,” Botello’s oil painting Niños con Pájaros is a sublime example of his slightly Surrealist yet warmly colored paintings (est. $20,000-30,000).
Lolo Soldevilla
One of three works by Soldevilla featured in the sale, a work on panel is a fantastic example by the leader of the Cuban Concretism movement. Soldevilla brought back to Cuba the Avant Garde art she discovered in Europe, introducing geometric abstraction to her fellow artists and launching an artistic revolution (est. $8,000-12,000).
Francisco Toledo
An ink and watercolor by Oxacan master Francisco Toledo shows a brightly colored, Expressionistic bull charging a matador with flowing red cape (est. $2,000-4,000).
Post-War & Contemporary Art
Latin American Art will be offered as a featured section of the auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art. Highlights include works by Marino Marini, George Condo, Melvin Edwards, Wolf Kahn, Francesco Clemente, Helen Frankenthaler, Nabil Nahas, Richard Smith, Bernar Venet, Richard Mayhew and Claes Oldenburg.
