AbEx Women Shine in Contemporary Art at Swann

New York—Contemporary Art comes across the block on Thursday, November 21 at Swann Galleries with a broad range of work from the 1950s through this century. Also featured in the auction is a noteworthy array of Abstract Expressionist prints with an emphasis on works by women of the movement. 

            The specially curated offering of works by women of the New York Abstract Expressionist school opens the sale. Highlights include a run of prints by Helen Frankenthaler, notably an hors commerce impression of a 1989 color Mixografia on handmade paper Guadalupe ($20,000-30,000) and a 1987 color screenprint Mary, Mary, based on the painting of the same name ($6,000-9,000). Joan Mitchell is present with Sides of a River II, color lithograph, 1981 ($12,000-18,000), and Louise Nevelson is represented by Throne, a 1979 painted wood and paper collage relief sculpture ($15,000-20,000). Works by Rosemarie Beck, Lee Bontecou and Lee Krasner round out the exceptional selection.

            Further works by Abstract Expressionists include two 1944-45 drypoints by Jackson Pollock, each estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. William de Kooning is available with Revenge, sugar-lift aquatint, 1960, and High School Desk, lithograph, 1970, expected at $4,000 to $6,000 and $7,000 to $10,000, respectively.

Roy Lichtenstein leads a run of Pop Art with career-spanning works. The offering includes a 1996 color screenprint Titled ($25,000-35,000); as well as, two 1967 color lithographs Explosion ($12,000-18,000), and Whaam! ($7,000-10,000). Among works by Andy Warhol are the 1962 photoengraving Cooking Pot, Warhol’s first published single-sheet printed work ($10,000-15,000); Marilyn (Announcement), color screenprint, 1981 ($6,000-9,000), and Mick Jagger Portfolio, a complete set of 10 color-offset lithograph gallery postcards, 1975 ($4,000-6,000). Keith Haring rounds out the selection with a 1982 lithograph estimated at $10,000 to $15,000 and International Youth Day, color lithograph, 1985, at $3,000 to $5,000.

            Hard-edge abstraction include Josef Albers with a run of color screenprints of the artist’s iconic squares, as well as Duo H, a 1966 machine-engraved Resopal laminate that challenges the viewer’s perception of optics. The work carries an estimate of $25,000 to $30,000.

            The sale is led by Vik Muniz’s 2004 Cibachrome print Romy Schneider (from the Diamond Series), at $60,000 to $90,000. Additional work from the last two decades is represented with Acquainted with the Night, a 2012 color aquatint with handcoloring in watercolor and gouache by Howard Hodgkin. The print is offered alongside the illustrated catalogue signed by Hodgkins in a custom-made a blue fabric clamshell portfolio at $10,000 to $15,000. Also of note are works by Judy Chicago, Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami and Pat Steir.

            Exceptional multiples include Lucio Fontana’s Concetto Spaziale (Rosa), 1968, a synthetic vacuum-formed plastic multiple, valued at $6,000 to $9,000; Richard Hamilton’s 1970 vacuum formed acrylic and cellulose Guggenheim (White), available at $12,000 to $18,000; and a selection of works by Jeff Koons: Cracked Egg, anodized cast aluminum, 2008, estimated at $1,500 to $2,500, as well as two 2015 metallic porcelain Balloon Dogs in orange and pink expected at $6,000 to $9,000 and $7,000 to $10,000, respectively.

            Additional highlights are Combat (I), a 1968 oil on canvas from Leon Golub’s Gigantomachia series, made in response to the Vietnam War, and drawing upon classical figures, present at $30,000 to $50,000; Head and Shoulders, a 1982 studio proof etching by Lucian Freud expected to bring $10,000 to $15,000; and a 1984 oil on canvas abstraction by Milton Resnick, estimated at $12,000 to $18,000.
