Highlighting MAG's Summer Season 2014 are three major marine paintings from a New England seacoast estate that have been in private hands for over 80 years. These fresh-to-market works were painted by J.E. Buttersworth (1817-1894) who is considered by experts as a seminal marine artist. American art collector and historian John Wilmerding credits Buttersworth as "a leading 19th century marine painter, noting the artist is one of the few who could go beyond ship portraiture to portray a scene of a larger environment and mood."

Buttersworth's yachting scenes are avidly collected by prominent museums and private collectors. The three paintings featured include a large oil of the Yacht America, which is illustrated in the book "J.E.Buttersworth 19th Century Marine Painter" by Rudolph J. Schaefer on page 118. The two smaller 'jewel-like' paintings include "America's Cup Yachts Galatea and Mayflower" and "Yacht Racing in New York Harbor with Naval Salute at Castle Williams on Governor's Island."

Also included in the Summer Season are our paintings by Montague Dawson, Antonio Jacobsen, Ralph Cahoon, Jack L. Gray, John Stobart, Dusan Kadlec, and a selection of Cape Ann art including Emile A. Gruppe and Anthony Thieme.
