Warren and Julie Payne of Louisville, Kentucky, share highlights from their collection of late 19th and early 20th century prints by American women. The exhibition also includes works on paper by influential artists of the time, such as James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Thomas Moran, and Berthe Morisot.

In the latter half of the 19th century, many artists were exploring the etching process for printmaking, which involves drawing with an etching needle on a copper plate prepared with chemicals. In 1887, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts displayed the work of American women artists in the exhibition, "Women Etchers of America."  The following year, the Union League Club in New York mounted an even more comprehensive version of the show.

Because etchings incorporate fine art drawing techniques, they encompass both original artwork and reproductive prints. The etching revival of the 1880s enabled artists to fully create their own work, as they had done in Rembrandt's time. Several American women were fully invested in this trend, and through selected works on paper from the Payne collection, this exhibition offers a glimpse of the fruits of these artists' labors.
