Johannes Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earring, c. 1665. Oil on canvas, 44.5 x 39 cm. Mauritshuis, The Hague

On June 23, 2015, the story behind Johannes Vermeer’s beloved masterpiece—among the most recognized paintings in the world—will be explored in a new film “Girl with a Pearl Earring and Other Treasures from the Mauritshuis in The Hague.” Audiences will be taken on a journey of discovery through one of the finest collections of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, displayed in the Mauritshuis’s newly refurbished jewel-box 17th century mansion.

Showcasing Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) and a rich sampling of other Dutch and Flemish masterworks in refurbished galleries, the film will be in U.S. film theaters for one night only on June 23, 2015. Audiences will go behind-the-scenes with eminent curators, art historians, conservators, and scholars to better understand the extraordinary allure of the 350-year-old painting, its captivating subject, and Vermeer’s oeuvre alongside other masterworks from the period including The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632) by Rembrandt, The Goldfinch (1654) by Carel Fabritius, and The Bull (c. 1647) by Paulus Potter.

Following two years of extensive renovations that doubled its space, Mauritshuis reopened in June 2014. During this period, the museum toured a selection of the collection, including Girl with a Pearl Earring and masterworks by Rembrandt, Hals, Rubens, and Steen. Traveling to Japan, the United States, and Italy, the tremendously popular exhibition was seen by an estimated 2.2 million museum visitors internationally.

Tracy Chevalier, author of the bestselling novel “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (published in 1999 and subsequently made into a film by Peter Webber in 2003) and Nina Siegal, author of “The Anatomy Lesson,” reflect on their research into the lives and times of Vermeer and Rembrandt, respectively. Acclaimed British actor Hugh Bonneville narrates.

Girl with a Pearl Earring and Other Treasures from the Mauritshuis in The Hague” was directed by David Bickerstaff, produced by Seventh Art Productions for EXHIBITION ON SCREEN, and distributed worldwide by Arts Alliance.
