- Available online, on smartphones and tablets, the platform enables professionals and art amateurs alike to make online offers on 1,200 authenticated and appraised new lots carefully selected and updated by our team every day
- Successful bidders grab a bargain: Auction After Sale items often sell for less than the initial auction price
- We aim to disrupt the auction market by making it accessible to everyone
"Behind the headline-grabbing sales records achieved by auction houses recently lies a different reality: a huge number of quality items that fail to sell at auction. Looking at contemporary art sales for instance, a third of the lots do not sell during the auction process, up to half in China. Yet unsold does not mean unloved or unwanted. Sales fail for all sorts of reasons – the buyer could have missed the sale or forgotten to put a bid for it, the item may not have been marketed adequately or offers may not have met the reserve price etc. A typical auction sale only lasts a couple of hours. At Auction After Sale, items are on offer for 10 days. Our platform gives a second chance to an often disregarded source of unique pieces, generating countless opportunities for smart bargain hunters to grab a fantastic deal or simply get hold of a unique item as a treat or for their collection," explains Jean-Baptiste Fabre, a Geneva-based art broker and founder of the website.
| A disruptive auction model |
Uber, the world’s largest taxi company, owns no cars. Airbnb, one of the world’s largest hospitality companies, owns no properties. At Auction After Sale, we have no inventory. Just like the world’s most disruptive companies, we believe that allowing customers to play according to their own rule is key. We also believe that the hundreds of thousands of unique lots that fail to sell at auction every year should be given a second chance. Launched on February 1, 2016 in the UK after a successful start in continental Europe, Auction After Sale offers online buyers the opportunity to acquire unsold lots during a determined 10-day period after the initial auction. With prices ranging from £300 to £150,000 – bidding is within everyone’s reach. Our online catalogue brings together several thousands lots from over 2,500 auction houses across the world. All items have been appraised by experts and come with their original authentication. The catalogue is updated on a daily basis and covers 90 different specialties (including Design & Decorative Arts, Watches, Photography, Modern & Contemporary Art, Asian & Middle-Eastern Art, Primitive Art & Archeology, Furniture & Arts, Collectibles, Old Paintings, Sculptures and Drawings, Jewellery & Vintage etc.). After a bid offer is made on the platform, Auction After Sale forwards the offer to the relevant auctioneer. If the offer is accepted, standard buyers’ fees apply (of 30%). These fees are usually claimed by auction houses and Auction After Sale pays itself out of some of the buyer’s fees inherent to any auction sale.
| How it works |
1 - A visitor hunts for bargains through thousands of lots from auction houses across the world.
2 - The visitor has 10 days to make an offer on the lot he or she is interested in.
3 - Auction After Sale transmits the offer to the relevant auctioneer.
4 - If the offer is accepted, the website connects the buyer with the auctioneer.
5 - When making the offer, the buyer makes a safety deposit representing half the buyer’s fees (typically 15% of the offer price); this amount is frozen on his or her credit card and debited only if the offer is accepted.
6 - If the offer is declined, the buyer can make a new offer or withdraw.
