The Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present Italia, an exhibition of recent paintings by Brad Marshall, opening 12 September and continuing through 11 October 2014.  There will be an opening reception for the Artist, Friday, September 12 from 5 to 7pm. This is Marshall’s sixth solo exhibition at The Fischbach Gallery.

The panoramic paintings in Italia resulted from the extensive trip Brad Marshall took in 2013.  However, they are not meant to be a simple travelogue, or post cards from the road. Similar to nineteenth century Hudson River School painters, Marshall is attracted to dramatic locations.

“I went to Cinque Terre where these towns and the trails that link them are a truly amazing and a unique place. The pastel buildings coming up from the blue Mediterranean water, the terraced, vine covered cliffs...and then there is Lake Maggiore. I stayed in Stresa across from the Borromeo Islands. Here are green mountains, rising out of the lake, dotted by towns and villages. It is literally "jaw dropping" beautiful, as if invented by a Hollywood special effects team. These paintings hopefully convey a sense of place, not just to show that I have been there, but to evoke the feelings I had when I felt compelled to turn the landscape into paintings. My goal is not to say ‘look where I have been’, but rather to put the viewer in my place as I looked, to capture some of the beauty I felt.

It was an embarrassment of riches, there was no problem in finding scenes to photograph and sketch for paintings. The hardest part was knowing that I could only have a limited number of them. The real challenge was whether I could do justice to the land. Could I give the viewer a feeling of the breathtaking beauty and grandeur that I found?”   - Marshall 2014

Born in 1955, Marshall trained in painting and illustration at the San Francisco Academy of Art. He currently resides in New York City.
