Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge is pleased to present a massive Ralph Eugene Cahoon painting at this year's Nantucket Antiques Show.
The early signed painting, from a private collection, depicts a scene of a New England Seaside Village Dock and dates from around 1960.
The dimensions of 30 inches x 42 1/2 inches make it one of the larger examples of his work.
The painting of a traditional New England village square and docks is populated with Ralph Cahoon's typical characters of sailors and mermaids. The engaging scene is borrowed from an overmantel picture seen in Nina Fletcher Little's American Decorative Wall Painting, 1700-1850, Page 47, Fig 43, of an overmantel from an unidentified house possibly in Marblehead. The overmantel in now installed at Beauport, former home of Henry D. Sleeper, Gloucester Mass. (Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, Boston, Mass).
2014 Antiques & Design Show of Nantucket is the Nantucket Historical Association’s major annual fund-raising event and the 37th Annual Antiques & Design Show will be held July 30–August 4, 2014.
