Redefining Modernism, an exhibition exploring American Modernist art from the 1940s to the 1970s, will open at Addison Rowe Gallery (229 East Marcy Street) on May 16, 2014 with a public reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

The exhibition juxtaposes major east and west coast painters from that period with their New Mexico counterparts. It will show that many of the most renowned New York and Bay-area artists had the same teachers and influences as the lesser-known Taos Moderns. This visual comparison will reveal the Taos painters as integral within the scope of American Modernism and not simply satellite artists.

Gallery Director Matthew Rowe explains, “This is not an attempt to rediscover lost genius, but to expand the definition of American Modernism. Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky, George LK Morris, John DePuy, Louis Ribak, Thomas Benrimo, and many more artists will be featured. We are excited to host such a diverse collection of artists in Santa Fe.”

There will also be a closing party on June 27, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m.
