Copley Fine Art Auctions (www.copleyart.com) set a new world record for classic American sporting artist Arthur Burdett Frost at their Winter Sale 2015, held February 12 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Quail - A Covey Rise sold for $180,000, more than doubling the previous world record of $85,250. Fall Woodcock Shooting, also a part of Frost’s Shooting Pictures folio, had stood at the previous record for over twenty-five years after selling at Sotheby’s in 1989. John James Audubon’s Snowy Owl sold for $72,000 on a $60/90,000 estimate.
The auction saw $1.84 million in sales and a 95% sell-through rate. There was robust bidding across numerous fields including paintings, prints, folk art, decoys, and vintage fishing tackle.
The top decoy lot was Nathan Cobb’s swimming brant $81,000 on its $80/120,000 estimate. The second highest decoy lot was A.E. Crowell’s curlew, landing at $63,000, soaring past its $35/45,000 estimate.
Antique bamboo rods found spirited bidding with E. Everett Garrison’s model 201, 7ft., 2/2, serial no. T 7 1 selling for $6,900, multiples over its estimate. The top reel, Stanley Bogdan’s Model 0 Salmon Fly Wheel, brought in $4,428.
