Searching for the perfect gift for a connoisseur this holiday season?
The Curator’s Eye, (www.CuratorsEye.com), the distinctive online platform for the finest art and antiques from distinguished dealers across the globe, presents thousands of truly unique gift options. With offerings ranging from American folk art to Imperial Roman jewelry, The Curator’s Eye is a treasure trove of stocking stuffers that possess a sense of history.
1. In the spirit of the Christmas season, many beautiful and collectible artifacts reflect the long history of the religion, including an illuminated manuscript leaf depicting the Adoration of Mary from France, circa 1475. This remarkable, extremely-detailed 15th-century leaf has a total of twenty-eight images including saints, angels, donors, Madonna and the baby Jesus.
2. For the stylish history lover, consider a French double-lidded snuff box. Snuff containers like this were among the most fashionable luxury items in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were among a gentleman's most expensive and elegant personal effects, and soon became collector's items.
3. Also available is a 110-Gun Bone Antique Ship Model. The war between Napoleon’s French navy and the naval forces of King George III of England lasted so long that the captured French prisoners had to find resourceful ways to spend their imprisonment, sometimes lasting more than eleven years.
4. If folk art is more your collector’s speed, consider a polychrome scrimshaw whale tooth attributed to George Hiliott. It has a wonderful detailed engraving of a formally dressed woman wearing a necklace with a cross on one side and a Polynesian scene on the other.
5. Translucent “chicken fat” yellow glass bowl modeled in the form of a large lotus leaf. It is thought this clump of lotus represents “firm roots and luxuriant branches, or May your business have a firm foundation and may it flourish.”
6. For the collector interested in unique items around the home, consider a bejeweled Moghul Dagger, circa 1690. This rare and extraordinary 17th-century Moghul knife, known as a kard, boasts an exquisite white jade handle covered with rare Burma rubies and engraved gold.
7. Also on offer with significance for the season, is a 17th-century model of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This olive wood model is intricately inlaid with engraved mother-of-pearl and bone and has numerous removable sections which reveal the detailed interior of the Church. These highly prized exquisite models were made for wealthy pilgrims in the Holy Land from the beginning of the 17th century.
