April Gornik To Speak at ArtTalks—AFA’s Lecture Series

The American Federation of Arts (AFA) is pleased to announce artist April Gornik as the next featured speaker in its 2009/10 ArtTalks series. Following the lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and a wine reception hosted by Christie’s.

About April Gornik: A painter renowned for her virtuosity, Gornik has earned a reputation as a contemporary American successor to J.M.W. Turner with her large-scale landscapes. Gornik’s paintings, which often feature dramatic depictions of sea, lakes, fields, marshes, rain, and storms, are devoid of human figures, inviting the viewer to inhabit them. She has recently traveled to Namibia and Tanzania, and in many of her subsequent works, the open African plain conveys a sense of the sublime in nature.
Gornik has been exhibiting steadily in solo and group exhibitions for nearly three decades and was the subject of a major mid-career retrospective at the Neuberger Museum of Art in 2004. Her work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of American Art, and the High Museum of Art, among others. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guild Hall Museum in 2003 and was the Neuberger Museum’s Annual Honoree in 2004. April Gornik is represented by Danese Gallery, New York.
