Eisele Painting Brings Just Shy of $12,000

Matthew’s Galleries March 16th art auction resulted in a good-sized crowd, somewhat mixed results, but an overall successful sale. The featured lot was a panoramic circa 1890 view of Portland, Oregon. The 40” x 70” canvas carried an estimate of $8,000-12,000 and fetched just below the high figure of $12,000 (prices include buyer premium). William S. Parrott’s view of Mt. Hood, a 11.5” x 7” oil, fell within estimate at $4,560, yet an 16” x 8” Alaskan oil by Sydney M. Laurence fell below the low guess at $11,400. Modernist works of note were an oil by Robert Colescott, seated woman, 34” x 15” sold within estimate at $3,705, and a collage by Paul Horiuchi estimated at $1,500-2,000 brought $1,425. The gallery is planning a fine & decorative arts auction for June 1, 2010.

Matthew's Galleries was opened by its current owner/director Matthew W. Gerber in 1968. The specialty has always been quality 19th & 20th century American paintings with some European works as well.
