Frank Lloyd Wright's bold, textile-block Ennis House in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles is for sale with an asking price of $15 million.

An eclectic incarnation of the world-renowned architect's work, the Mayan-inspired house was built for men's clothing magnate Charles Ennis and his wife Mabel in 1924.

Wright created four textile-block houses in Los Angeles County between 1923 and 1926. Ennis House is the grandest of them all, encompassing more than 20,000 16-inch by 16-inch concrete blocks in 6,000-square feet at the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Listed by the U.S. Department of the Interior in the National Register of Historic Places, Ennis House has been named by the City of Los Angeles as a cultural heritage monument, and it is a California State Landmark.

Similar in situation to many historic homes today, such as Edith Wharton's The Mount, Ennis House has been in a harrowing state of financial crisis. Costly rehabilitation and continuous maintenance is needed. The Ennis House Foundation oversaw its refurbishment in late 2005 to 2007, but guided tours ceased in 2007.

As a small non-profit organization, the foundation has been unable to raise sufficient funds for the upkeep of the massive structure. The foundation, with actress Diane Keaton on the board, has been instrumental in preserving the historic home from demolition for years.

The unique facade of Ennis House may seem familiar even to those not aware of Wright's entire oeuvre. The home has played a background role in numerous films, including Blade Runner (1982), starring Harrison Ford, the 1959 horror flick House on Haunted Hill, as well as Rush Hour, The Day of the Locust, Black Rain, and The Replacement Killers.

Kay Coughlin, president and CEO of Christie's Great Estates, stated on the firm's Web site, "The Ennis House deserves to be restored to its original brilliance. The person who undertakes the task will be helping to preserve Frank Lloyd Wright's legacy, and in doing so, will create a legacy of their own which will endure for generations."

Hilton & Hyland and Dilbeck Realtors are co-listing Ennis House with international marketing services provided by Christie's Great Estates.
