American Art Scholar Alexander Nemerov to Speak at Thomas Cole Site
This Sunday, March 9 at 2 pm, Alexander Nemerov will speak at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site. Highly sought after as a speaker, Nemerov has lectured throughout the United States and internationally. A celebrated teacher whose “Introduction to the History of Art” course at Yale was perennially the most popular course on campus, and a noted writer and speaker on the arts, Nemerov is committed to teaching the history of art more broadly as well as topics in American visual culture, including the history of American photography and film. The title of his talk this Sunday is “The Chiaroscuro of Thomas Cole,” which explores Cole’s use of light and dark in his landscape paintings, and what those strong contrasts tell us about America the place of Cole’s art in it. Using as his point of departure the elegant gentleman’s hat Cole wore, Dr. Nemerov considers the swirl of thoughts in the head beneath the hat.
