KIM WESTFALL: STOP THE WORLD I WANT TO GET OFF
Kim Westfall lives in Brooklyn, grew up in New Jersey, and was born in Seoul, Korea. In the past, her work has towed the line between abstract and representational spaces, but has since moved towards filmic imagery. She breaks film's language apart, and then reassembles screenshots as paintings that freely mix personal history with film tropes and imagined story lines. The work in her solo exhibition at Big Medium celebrates the personal refractions, manipulations, and vulnerability that mark an obsession or fan experience mediated by the internet's hyperactive flow and distraction. The results are grotesque combines of film canon, straight to video rejects, and that time you almost drowned in her parent's pool. Opening reception is Aug. 22, 7-10 pm.
